Aftermarket temp gauge
When I bought my 1968 c10 truck it had three aftermarket gauges (ammeter, oil pressure, and temp gauge) The ammeter is not hooked up, the oil pressure gauge works, and the temp gauge is hooked up to the bung below the drivers side head, however it doesn't work at all. After searching the forum it looks like I should undo the wire out of the sensor bung and ground it to see if the temp gauge even works, correct? If it does work then do I just need a new sensor?

ground out should go past hot, and if yes then change the sending unit.

The sending unit is just the sensor bung that is bolted in below the head yes?

yes, and you may want to be sure that the right one is installed, for that gauge.

It's a sunpro, also, the gauge itself doesn't need to be grounded does it? Should there should just be the one wire going beneath the head to the gauge and that's it?

I do not know enough about the gauges you are referring to, to be certain, but the factory temp gauge IS grounded thru the instrument cluster.

Hmmm, maybe I should just try grounding the gauge and seeing if that works. Be back in 10 minutes!!!

Well, there wasn't a place on the back of the guage to connect a ground wire to, so I unbolted the sensor out of it housing and grounded it, and nothing.
So either the wire is broke (inside of the steel cable sleeve it's in) or my gauge is no good right?

make sure theere isn't any teflon or other material on the sensor keeping it from getting a good ground off the block. you can use an ohmeter to check the wire and see if it is broken, and also to see if the sending unit is putting out a signal

I have a guick question for you that may help. Was your original dash a warning light dash or a gauge dash? If yours is a warning light dash and they used the sender for warning lights then the gauge wont work. An easy way to tell the sender for each is the connection on the light one looks like a the end of a flat screwdriver, the gaudge one conection looks like the top of a nail. You need the nail type sender for gauges. Good luck.

There is no wire inside the cable. The gauge you have is a mechanical gauge-needs no wires. If it does not work then the fluid tube inside the sleeve is broke or kinked. No way to fix it-buy a new one.
