5 lug axles in a 6 lug housing?
Would it do any damage or be unsafe to put a set of 1971-72 5 lug axles in my 69 6 lug rear housing? Where would that put the bearing? Are the housings wider or just the axle shafts? Anybody have any pics of this? Thanks
-Lance

It's a catastrophic success.

The bearing surface will work but the wider 5 lug axles cause the brake drum to not cover the shoes properly, use drums from a 73-87 they are wider and will remedy this.

Ive done it and a guy on here has been riding on a setup like this for awhile. Use a drum off of a 74-87 with 11-5/32" x 2-3/4" brakes to make up the difference. Do a search on my handle in the drivtrain forum to find the thread with pics.

Re: 5 lug axles in a 6 lug housing?
I did this on my 69 stepside. I used passenger car axles(67 impala ) if I remember right.they were exactly the same length as the truck axles, and I think I just redrilled my truck drums to the 4 3/4 bolt pattern.I was using 8" corvette rallys on the truck.

I called Classic Performance products and for about 400 bucks you get brand spankin new axles, wheel studs, diff gasket and a new set of brake drums. I would recommend this.

Re: 5 lug axles in a 6 lug housing?
I have recntly bought a 5 lug rear axle for my truck but want to keep the 3.73 gears in my 6 lugger. I am going to be doing a 4 wheel disc brake conversion soon and didnt know if the 'extra' length would give me more clearance between the backing plate and axle.

If you are gonna pull the axles, it's the perfect time to switch to disc.
