anyone know if i need a new tranny?

What's the fluid level... checked in park with the engine running after going through all the gears

What color is the fluid

What's the fluid smell or taste like?

Are you sure the linkage is actually working, both in and out of the tranny... should hear a definate click as it goes into each selection.

Do NOT attempt to put it in gear or even run the engine until you have checked the fluid,the filter,the valve-body connections and the linkage etc as LHM has mentioned.

good save.... fluid level is vital. Ensure it is good before you go trying to rev it up in drive or something.

No forward and have reverse=bad trans.

Probably, but you gotta cover the basics first.
And I have seen the shift linkage come disconected inside the pan where it controls the little piston deal, this caused this exact symptom on my last truck, it would go into neutral, but no further, yet, the shifter would move making me think I was in gear.
Odds are though, it's a bum tranny.

if the fluid is low, it will eventually shift into gear if you rev it a little. I wouldnt do this very long though. Tranny fluid is cheap, rebuilds aren't.

Should the linkage be exposed when you open the pan? I never opened mine but the shifter has too much slack internally. Sorry for going a little off topic.---Andy

the fluid was low and i added a quart to bring it up to full. when i put it in a fwd gear there is no surge or anything.

Ouch, a quart is a lot to loose. What did the color of the fluid look like? Dark fluid means bad things. You may get lucky by changing the filter. I am sure a tranny expert is lurking on here somewhere...

The prognosis isn't too good. Usually a trans that is just low on fluid gets fryed then the driver stands on the peddle trying to get his vehicle to move.
How many miles on the tranny? Condition of fluid is...?
Also a quart low,IIRC is not enough to run dry since the pan holds 2.5 quarts.
