Exhaust note
With everything else being equal, if you increase the tailpipe diameter, will the exhaust note get deeper? I'm using 2 1/4 pipes with DynoMax Super Hemi Turbos (what a name, huh?). From outside, there's too much of a cheesy rat-tat-tat sound on acceleration. I'm wondering if 2.5" tailpipes would change the tone. If not, I may try using some bullet-type race mufflers to knock the sound down a bit. Another option is some resonator exhaust tips, like those made by Hedman. What do you all think? Yeah, I know -- my 383 really needs a full 2.5" system.

The larger diameter pipe/muffler will tone down the rat-a-tat-tat some, but first I would try a balance pipe if you don't have one.

Yeah...just like Mike C said. Try a balance pipe first. It's going to be a lot cheaper than replacing the whole exhaust system if it satisfies you.

I have a balance pipe -- full 2 1/4".

I have the same problem. I have the same set up as you but with Flowmasters and no H-Pipe. In a couple weeks I'm changing over to 2.5 pipes with the H-Pipe, hopefully that will work.

I know that Flowmasters are the "in" muffler now, but I personally think they sound tinny --they're just loud. I suppose I'll get flamed, but there are better, deeper sounding mufflers out there--I won't mention a brand or some will think I'm selling them. Pipe size doesn't matter that much. Muffler size, length and style has much more to do with a good deep sound--also, long, large tips with a thick wall (16 ga.) helps. JMHO

Smitty, what has worked best for you?
Dion, let me know how it turns out. Don't use anything less than the 70-series if you are looking for quiet. I once had the 50s with Delta Flow Technology and even they were loud.

I'm not really looking for "quiet" but more of a low rumble. I have the low rumble now at idle but on the highway it's more of a slpping kind of noise, that's what I'm trying to get rid of. I have the Flowmaster 40's on now.
