Just Came Down On Orders For Fort Hood Texas.....

Well, the Army has decided to send me to Fort Hood Texas. Anyone around the Killen, Austin, Waco, area? Not sure how long I'll actually be there due to the fact I might be headed for Iraq... Lets here a shout out from Texas!

Killeen is actually closer to Austin, Waco, and San Antonio than it is to Houston. I am in the San Antonio area. Hopefully you'll get here before it starts to heat up.

Re: Just Came Down On Orders For Fort Hood Texas.....

I spent about 6 years at Ft Hood... they call it "the great Place" Remember that, you may win some applebees coupons at the 21st replacement detachment. (I did upon returning to hood)
Harker Heights was my preference over kileen. Killeen seemed to really suck. Coperas Cove rubbed me the wrong way every time i went there. (Those are the 3 main town around Ft Hood)
We have a member that lives right there, texan1186 lives in harker heights.
What's your MOS? Pray you don't go to the first Cav... theyLIVE in the field... 4th ID is just as screwed up, but they are only in the field 4 months out of the year. I spent time in both divisions there on Hood.
Of course, none of that matters with all the real deploiments they are rotating though.
I've been gone for 6 years now, but i'm willing to shoot off old info if you need it.

I'm not sure if I will go to 1st Cav or 4th ID. Im a 15P which is a Aviation Operations Specialist. It like an Air Traffic Controller (Assistant). Im going in support of Task Force Odin. Theres a new aviation bde that is forming. I checked my ERB but its down right now. Yeah so the truck has a nice long haul she has to make from AL to Texas. Man, I really dont want to leave My fiance is here going to school at UAB. Shes going to stay here and finish college due to the fact that her GI Bill from her father (retired E-7) only works for the state of AL. So thats going to be very tough. We plan on getting married before I leave. Its like one day everything is going good and you have plans for your future and the next, Im going to another post getting ready to deploy....

My son Mike is recently back from Iraq and at Ft. Hood as we speak. I have many military customers that I talk with regularly most of whom have fond memories of Hood. It is one of the bases that has the most stuff to do in your "off time" and Mike likes it there also. He will only be there about another month or so and then he is going to Ft. Drum, N.Y. Ice box of the lower U.S... lol WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

The Old Man And I Frequently Hit Garage Sales There. Usually Pretty Good Pickins. We'll Hit About 120-140 Garage Sales In One Saturday.

Killeen Is Kind Of A Mess. You'd Be Better Off Huntin' Down Some Baylor Gals In Waco...

Just to let you know your wife can use your MGIB and college fund now..... She is authorized.... Also if you become a resident of Texas they will pay for your college and i believe that they will help with your wifes..... Hood is not that bad and the new AVN BDE is going to be in the 4th ID. Let me know if you need anything!

The TX Hill Country is right there, it's the best part of the state if you like the outdoors. And the BBQ is good too, try Cooper's in Llano.

Re: Just Came Down On Orders For Fort Hood Texas.....

I know I all ways wanted to goto Ft Hood but never got there 2 trips to Korea 2nd ID and 2 in Ga Ft. Gordon and Ft. Benning. I'm from Houston so would have been like home. Now in Ma Hanscom AFB and must say starting to hate the snow. My wifes mother worked at Ft. Rucker as a DOD worker. We got married there she grew up in Dothan Al.

He said after 9/11 happened he would have to wake up by 3am just to make PT at 630am! Im going from Ft Rucker to Ft Hood, what a change!

North ft hood is all training area as far as regular army personel are concerned... so "you'll love north ft hood" means have fun in the field!
Funny... messed up, but funny.

Traffic (as of a few years ago) was OK if you left a little early. I remember if I left at 6 am, I'd get there within 15 min (10 mile drive) if I left at 6:05... I was usually late for the 6:30 formation.
I'd imagine with 1/3 of hood's population being overseas.. traffic won't be an issue, but you'll know it when they get back.

I have a Fire Dept Coworker that was stationed in Fort Rucker AL when he was training to be a Blackhawk Pilot a few years ago. I think he is deployed in Iraq right now.

Yeah, I'm from Opp, which is only a few minutes from Enterprise, and my family says it was terrible. Looks like a warzone from what they've told me; they said it looks a lot worse in person than what the news outlets are showing.
