this rear ends got me boiling :-(
well i bought moser axles for my 67 and while i was at it had them convert the bolt pattern to 5 on 4 3/4 so im going to change them out and the bearings and seals while im at it so i open it up. i go to take out the pin retaining bolt and guess what it twist off with ease so now i have the small pin portion stuck in the large pin that goes between the axles, so i drill a hole in it and attempt to remove it with an easy out, guess what the easy out broke off in it, so now i try to drill it again and am burning up bits left and right, guess im screwed and will have to find another rear end to rebuild .....

Hmmm..that's not an easy one..I just took a rear end apart the other night..but luckily everything came apart as it should.
I don't know of any way to get that apart without really screwing up the carrier ......unless...Could you drill out the end of the big pin? that would drill through the small pin holding it in place...but it still wouldn't solve the problem of the smaller pin being broken off in the carrier... At the very least, I'd say cut the chunk open (to get the axels out) and find a new chunk....or a new rear end.

Ouch. I feel your pain.
Since you aren't saving the axles, l'd take a torch to the C-clips that hold the axles in. Once they're gone, pull the axles. Once they're out, then you can pull the carrier. Toss it in the heap along with the axles. Maybe you can save the gears if they're a desireable ratio for you. Non-posi carriers should be fairly inexpensive ($100 or less), just be sure they're the right series as yours. Posi carriers (Eaton) run about $400 new. Good luck.

I Don't Know How Much Room You Have To Do This, But I Have Got Broken Off Bolts Out By Using Penatrating Oil, A Chisel, And A Hammer. Spray It Up Well, Chisel Into The Top Edge Of The Broken Off Bolt, Then Start Chiseling Counter Clockwise To Turn The Bolt. Or I Have Welded A New Smaller Bolt Onto The Broken Off One, Then Heat Up The Outside Of The Hole With A Torch, Then Turn The Welded On Bolt Carefully. Both Work Well If You Have The Room. Just A Thought. The Worst That Could Happen Is You're Back To Where You Are Now. Good Luck To You!!

WAIT!!!
Put the torch, hammer and dynamite away!! Take it to a shop that has a EDM machine. It will remove the bolt and tap cleanly and completely... A hammer really isnt a tool that should ever be used outside of bodywork and bearings by daddy always told me... a good shop that I have used somewhat nearby is Reliable EDM, Inc. 6940 Fulton St. · Houston, TX 77022 800-WireEDM (800-947-3336) It wont take them but 20 min to blast it out when its set up. Yes Yes Yes. this is the exact tool you need to fix this. The best part is it's not expensive. I have worked in a machine shop and had horrible experiences turn good with this thing. It actually reverse welds the bad stuff out and does not hurt threads or pin holes or anything. Very good advice there. |

well never herd of an edm, i can tell you this im pretty shure i have alread damaged the threads, you see when you drill it unless you have a relly long bit you kinda have to go at an angle that may be why i broke off the tap, and you cant pull the thing out to get straight on it cause its locked in, any ways i figure ill torch it out later, an old buddy of mine hunted me up a complete 68 rear yesterday for 150.00 and its laying in the floor now i guess it will be good to go through it in the floor at least easier than under the truck, im praying the same thing don't happen though, bad part is i don't know what gear the new one is, my old one is 3.73 witch is optmal for my motor set up.. hopfull better luck next time

take your new one to the EDM, and have THEM remove it... Bad mongo, no torch, hammer and drill for you!

You should be able to get the old carrier apart and out without damanging the gears..the install those gears into the other rear end.
