Why you dont put bondo over that rust spot....

It rusts
I was working on the shortbed for the 4x4 and when I made my way to the bottom of the bed I started seeing bondo, and more bondo, till it was about a quarter inch thick...Well,I made my way to the bare metal, well whats left of it.Looks like some patching will be in order.

Hey, at least it wasnt full of a black, tar like substance. I discovered the rocker panels of a now long gone truck were packed full. Had to of been 50+ lbs of that crap in there! I guess yours could double as a cheese grader...!

Re: Why you dont put bondo over that rust spot....

One plus is that the 4x4 sits high enough that you can sit in a confortable chair while working on the bottom of the bed...

Re: Why you dont put bondo over that rust spot....

Dustin, I may rag on you for your affinity for rusty iron. But I will give you credit for having the gusto to bring one back from the dead. Lesser people would have let it die slowly in the boneyard. I know I would have.

The fact that you can say you fixed all that rust is one heck of an feat that nobody can take away.

I'll only add that with all that rust I'd suggest accelerating your tetanus shot booster to every 3 years instead of 10. You look like you need the extra protection...

Re: Why you dont put bondo over that rust spot....

Bondo is a porus material, any open holes that you fill with it will only wick water into the back side and rust away from underneath.

Tip of the day:
When welding or patching, shine a light from the back side of the panel or weld area to find any/all pin holes.

Re: Why you dont put bondo over that rust spot....

That area I need isnt remade is it?I know there is a patch the for longbed, but are there for shortbeds? As soon as I sell some parts and can afford to fix the area,I will.I wont find a good bed for hundreds of miles so I shouldnt waste my time looking and go ahead and weld in a patch panel.
Oh,and Jim...The truck was a low optioned truck with a 4spd and towhooks,no cheese grater listed in the glovebox

Re: Why you dont put bondo over that rust spot....

Just buy a rustfree shortbed, cut that section out, weld it into yours and junk the rest of the other bed.
