Angry BG Demon Carbs are WORTHLESS!!!

Well, I got the second Demon in this week after the first one was defective. This one wouldn't even run. The front float was defective on this one. It was just pouring fuel in there and it wouldn't idle. The float adjustment wouldn't do anything. After messing with it for nearly 2 hours I finally took it off and put it back in the box. The first one ran real well but was leaking fuel. These things are overrated and really suck. I can't believe how junky they are. Man I'm pissed. Now I'm considering a Quick Fuel, or a ProForm. Anyone had one of these??? Thanks.

Re: BG Demon Carbs are WORTHLESS!!!

Was the front float saturated, or the needle and seat stuck open? How much fuel pressure are you seeing at the carb?

Re: BG Demon Carbs are WORTHLESS!!!

The name thing did cross my mind of them although I am christian but not very religious! No there's no crap in my tank, and fuel pressure has never been a issue, I'm running a mechanical pump. When I took off the screw and nut that turns the float adjustment, I found that that brass deal that the nut turns was like frozen, the nut wasn't turning anything, the nut was actually stripped because of the frozen brass adjustment deal. Also the first demon after I first started it and did the initial tuning it was hitting pretty close and this one was like backfiring and acting starved for fuel. Then when I started to slowly turn the float adjustment nut clockwise the glass window went from like 2/3 full to all the way full and after that it never did run again, who knows. I could see 1 defective product but two in a row? Come on! The first carb ran great and probably only needed a gasket for the leak, but I didn't pay nearly 500 bucks for a "project carb" It actually might have been warped.

These carbs like more advance than other carbs. My Demon likes about 19 degrees initial and 42 total. It works awesome and has a held a tune for two years How much advance do you have???

I adjusted my timing to 19 degrees too. I followed the dvd and instruction manual to the T. I watched the DVD like 3 times before I attempted installing the first one.

Re: BG Demon Carbs are WORTHLESS!!!

Thanks 70C10, I'm all too familiar with that BG troubleshooting page! All I can say is BG has quality control issues. Happens to a lot of U.S.A. companys once they get a good reputation, they start leaning on their reputation a little too much. I'm really leaning towards QuickFuel, I hear their customer support is great and their carbs are even better.

Nothing like a joke to lighten things up, although it seems that this one had the opposite effect. I thought it was funny.

The name did deter me initially, but it is just a name, a gimmick if you will. I am glad it didn't derail my plans. I got a great deal on mine.

72 Step, good luck with quickfuel, I hear they are great carbs as well. Have you considered fuel injection?

Very cool truck, by the way!!!

Re: BG Demon Carbs are WORTHLESS!!!

-Begin rant-
I have had my Road Demon Jr. for about a year and have never been able to get it dialed in. I don't profess to be a carb guru but I know how to read (the manual) and follow instructions & have tried many times. I also called tech support and they more or less brushed me off. By that I mean the rep acted like he didn't want to talk to me and I had to pry any information out of him. I wasn't impressed. Iv'e changed the timing, tried two different intakes, removed the electric pump and installed a manual, etc, etc. Still runs like crap, If you set it so it starts it doesn't run good and if you set it so it runs good it's hard to start. It ran much better with the original Q-jet on it so that is what's going back on this spring. My suggestion would be to spend $100 and get your Q-jet rebuilt and spend the extra $200 on something really useful.... -End rant- ...

Just my 2¢ worth (from experience)

LockDoc,

We'll gladly go through this carburetor for you to make sure it is the proper carburetor for your application, and make sure it is working properly.

<snip>

I have only "tried" to dial one in without luck. I think it was far too much carb for the application, but a friend of mine thought it would be ok.

That's why I run Carters, They are jimmydean proof.

Re: BG Demon Carbs are WORTHLESS!!!

I still think most BG problems are buying the wrong carb for their application. I bought the wrong BG and it was awful. I bought the right one and it's the best carb I've ever had.

Re: BG Demon Carbs are WORTHLESS!!!

Since there have been a number of comments about our carburetors here we’d like to comment on them.

First, and foremost we would like to apologize for any issues anyone has had with our products, services, or staff. Remember, all carburetors will need to be tuned to the specific combination they are installed on regardless of what brand it is.

We manufacture our carburetors more specifically than some of our competitors which can lead to some confusion, and issues. Generally we find if the proper carburetor is installed from our product line vs. our competitors we usually have better performance. The problem comes in, when X size carburetor from one manufacture works OK, then the same size in a Barry Grant carburetor doesn’t.
We’ve found some carburetors (less than 1% of what we manufacture) with some debris in them, which is unacceptable. The goal is to have absolutely none, and to build the best product possible.

Since the majority of our products are made from billet components there is a higher chance of these types of issues than with cast components.

In the past a carburetor could have had trapped debris, and pass a flow test, but while getting bounced around during shipment the debris could become dislodged.

We have instituted the following changes to prevent these problems:

1) A vacuum system has been installed in all areas where drilling or machining is done to remove any debris from the parts.

2) A timed lock system has been installed on the pressure washer for the metering blocks to ensure they are flushed for the proper time.

3) Metering Blocks, and Main Bodies go through ultra sonic cleaning before final assembly.

4) Gaskets come from a sealed area to prevent debris from getting on the gaskets before the carburetors are assembled.

5) As always all carburetors are flow tested to proper specifications.

We appreciate the support, and feedback from our customers, and as always use this information to continually improve the quality, of our products, and services.

hmmm..... Thats a good point.

I only gave them one try. There are some that say good things but, IMO they are having too many problems.

It's just really dissapointing that they had such a good name going for them when they were upgrading the holley carbs.

Re: BG Demon Carbs are WORTHLESS!!!

between demon, and street avenger, i dont know which one is a bigger piece of crap. Neither one is worth the aluminum they are made from. No matter what, they require 20 hours of screwing around to make them work but the box says bolt on and go!

I have a 770 street Avenger thats been on my truck for 4 years...never a problem. I have a friend that has a BG Demon carb on a 427 in his Nova...again, never a problem. Maybe operator error?

Sound's like you've got junk in your gas tank and it's clogging the needle and seat. 95% of part malfunctions are operator error.

I have a 650 Speed Demon (vacuum secondaries) on my 68. I bought it on e-bay. I haven't had to fool with it at all, except for a heavier secondary spring. It has been a great carb, no problems at all

I haven't had any problems out of my 650 either. Tuned it in in 20 minutes and its been going strong for 2 years now. I've never been struck by lightning from using one of these carbs either. My Dads Dodge Demon is still rolling down the road after all these years to.
