Where do I put the 6x9? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have a pair of 6x9s I'd like to put in my '67 Chevy. Not a clue where though. Would perfer not to hack off the bottom metal part of the doors. Anyone have ideas or have done this themselves? Thanks

6x9's couple options,buy or make the boxes and have on floor by seat,or cut your doors.Suppse you could just use the magnet to stick to roof of cab????

Im gonna go with a mid in the kick panel area,and a tweeter maybe up on top of door somewhere,and a pair of 10's behind the seat,cd changer in the center console.CD player mounted underdash in a housing.and a factory am/fm hooked to its original speaker,just so i can say it works.

6X9's are not the best options for speakers in our trucks. But you could go with custom made boxes under the seats ( provided you have a bench) but I would use 6 1/2 or 5 1/4 and put them in the door. If you do a good install and carpet the bottm half, they look good. IMO

I have never figured out why people are so freaked out about cutting the doors. The same people that think moving the gas tank to the rear is cool,will not put speakers in the doors. Unless you have some highly optioned truck that is super rare, putting 6X9s in the doors is not going to change the value of the truck little if any. Any kind of boxes under the seats will sound like crap. It is your truck do what you want to do. My 2 cents.

I think that is funny too. 75% of these trucks have rust holes bigger than a 6x9 speaker, yet people don't wanna "cut the truck up".
It's yours. If you wanna cut it, then cut it. I think Radio Shack has boxes for 6x9's.
I know I'm gunna cut mine. The tank will be in the back so I have room for some 8's or 10's behind the seat and 6.5" mids w/tweets in the doors.

The 6X9 boxes suck in these trucks.
The wedge ones are too tall to go under the seat, you end up putting them on the floor under the front edge. If you wreck, they WILL come out and bite your ankles...trust me on that.
The flat ones will put the speaker about an inch from the seat cusion, and onless you have some real good watts pushing them, you won't hear them very well.
Onless you are d@mn good with wood and a saw...cut the doors.

Yeah i'd say cut the doors if you want some tunes. I've got some nice Cerwin vega's in my truck and i push about 100watts to em, they get good and loud, i still want more speakers though. i know some guys use the original speaker location for 2 4" speakers, and that's my new plan. IF you want the truck for show and classic dont cut, if you want it for you and to be whatever you need it to be then do whatever you wish, good luck.

It was pretty easy to make a smaller version of the wedge boxes you can buy.... they fit very well just under the front edge of the bench seat, you can't see em at all... I used some velcro to fasten them to the floor so they don't move around.

Combined with an amp and some tweeters in the corners behind the dash pad, they sound great... if you want more bass, you can add a small sub under the seat, or behind it if you've moved your tank.

I saw that overhead thing in JCWhitney but always to scared to order it and have it be funky.Im not afraid to really cut on my trucks either if its done nice.like dont use a torch to cut a hole for a cd player,or speaker holes,take your time cut it a little small the first time,cuting it to big would suck,and use a file for shaping,manual labor but arent our trucks worth it?When i was about 20 i cut a radio hole in my 63 Impala and did a sucky job after the cd player was in,i had a little gap.Use a new blade,or take it somewhere and have it cut with a plasma cutter

If you've decided to cut the doors, I'd suggest making the extra effort to do it right the first time... see if you can borrow a jigsaw and a power drill.

After tracing the pattern for the speaker hole onto the metal, drill a few holes just inside the border that you can fit the jigsaw blade into. Then use the jigsaw to do the cutting.... make sure the blade is rated for metal. Then you can clean the opening up with a file.

It's not impossible to re-weld the holes if you ever want to put em back to original.

with a recip saw, you'll basically be swatting a fly with sledge hammer, but it will work if you're careful... problem is that a recip saw is not very good at turning corners, might tear and bend the metal instead of cutting... someone you know must have a jigsaw...???
