Anybody had a truck in a magazine????

Has anybody here, I'm sure there is, had a truck blazer etc, in a magazine? Just wondering how to go about it, or if my truck is nice enuf? It has been a dream of mine since I was a little kid to get one of my trucks in a magazine. If anybody can help me that would be great.Thanx Dana

Re: Anybody had a truck in a magazine????

My k10 has been in print a few times. The key to this is being where the photographers/writers are. It doesn't matter how nice your truck is, the odds are they aren't coming to you. Finding a show that is getting magazine coverage is a good start. Even then it's hit or miss. You don't have to have the nicest truck out there. The guy making the pics just has to like it!

Re: Anybody had a truck in a magazine????

I had one of my EB's in a mag several years ago. I was down running Wrecking Ball in Johnson Valley Ca. and the guy came to me and asked if he could do a shoot

I had finished the EB about 2 months before this trip and it was very nice. 24hrs later it was totaled A few beers, Midnight, sand racing and a 30' cliff in that order. Good thing I build my own cages

I plan on getting every vehical that I build now adays in a mag or two but I have started building with this in mind before the vehical even starts getting cut on. We wil see how it goes.

I tricked out a Toyota PU that made the cover of Mini Trucking back in the early 90's.

Re: Anybody had a truck in a magazine????

Back in the 80's a friend of mine got his '67 Mustang in Hot Rod Magazine including a shot on the cover!! His car was parked in the parking lot at the Pomona swapmeet while he was inside hunting for parts and when he came out there was a business card under his wiper blade from a photographer for Hot Rod stating he would like to photograph his car, and would he give him a call. Needless to say, he called the photog. set up an appointment and his car was featured about 6 months later. He just happened to be in the right place at the right time,(and he had a great looking car...).

Right place right time where photographers are. Photographer liking the truck for maybe future articles/etc. They do not like plain black or white vehicles. They do not photgraph very well.

I am an editor for TRUCK BUILDER. The easiest way to go about it is to send in some photos or shoot some to me. The worst way to get your truck in a mag is ask an editor at a show to shoot it. That isn't very nice.lol

Agreed and have seen this a number of times. One kid actually went home and changed whatever the photographer used as a excuse to not shoot his truck each time. He still didn't get the truck in any magazine. I got to know my photographer pretty good and he is now a features editor for one of the 4wheel drive magizines.

Re: Anybody had a truck in a magazine????

My 59 GMC has been in two magazines.

#1 was Classic Trucks, the Classic rides section (reader rides), but it was a full page, colour, with 3 photos and a write up. For this I had emailed the editor after an editorial he had done on custom trucks and I wrote to say I thought Classic Trucks should stay Classic, and leave the customs to Custom Classic Trucks. I included a picture of my truck. He said if I submitted better photos he would publish them. Took about 6 months but it was published.

#2 Full page colour in Canadian Classics. Again I submitted photos and information for their reader rides section and they choose to turn it into a feature. I was happy for the coverage, but a little disappointed that they took my words, changed it to third person and then took credit for the article.

My truck was also in a Mar-K catalog.

I think it helps to have a truck with a colour that photographs well.

Submit pictures and see what happens.

Re: Anybody had a truck in a magazine????

So to get your truck in a magazine it is all about being in the right place at the right time and or knowing someone in the business? When i am finished building my truck i am hoping to get my truck in a magazine or two. Does it cost anything to have your truck in a magazine? Any other tips to get your truck in a magazine or two would be much appreciated!

Nice pics MUDDER!!!!! Congrats!

Josh

my 91 Sierra was in the backround of a picture in Mini Truckin' a few years ago. My dad's old 69 El Camino made it onto a baseball card in the early 80's.

Re: Anybody had a truck in a magazine????

Years ago my wife and I were on a trail ride in Tennessee in my old 90 k5. I ended up having to winched up a pretty gnarly hill and in the process got the winch line tangled up behind the rotor on one of the front wheels. A few months later when my issue of Four Wheeler came in the mail....There was my K5 on the cover. Small picture on one of the top corners of the front page.
Dont even know if i still have a copy.

Re: Anybody had a truck in a magazine????

My 71 Blazer was in the Fall 98 edition of Open Road and (sorry you guys have to hear this) my brother and I are co-owners of a 73 Bronco. The Bronco has been in many mags(it has won many trophys). You guys are right about having to be in the right place at the right time and you must be willing to make time for the photographers. They are usually trying to be everywhere at once and facing publishing deadlines.

Re: Anybody had a truck in a magazine????

One other thing to remember, the photogs usually want you to be available in the evening usually about the time you want supper. They like to shoot in the "SWEET" light. That means from just before the sun starts to set to almost full dark. They also claim that if you photo your own truck they don't want clutter or people around it.Sad to say they should follow their own advice. They seem to always print half the story on the gravel or grass in the picture where my 200-200 vision don't quite adjust enough to read.
