One more time - Grand dads 72 C10

Here is a picture of the truck I inherited from my Grandmother who recently passed away. My Granddad was the original owner in 72 and he passed away in 75. It has 38000 original miles – original tires – 350 with 4 barrel Rochester carb – I put new plugs and wires and did the carb kit and it started right up. It has a automatic turbo something transmission – 2 wheel drive – no air (didn’t need it in North Dakota they used the heater most of the year) – no tach – but everything else – heavy front and rear springs – factory pinstripe – The paint is yellow and it is all yellow except the pinstripe which is white – it has chrome hubcaps with yellow bowties and accent (same color as the truck). The interior is black vinyl. Driver’s side rocker has some surface rust not all the way through. Don’t know what else to tell you – now Mr. Moderator I am not going to ask those questions I did on my last post so please bare with me – in your opinions should I invest my time and money to work on it and take care of the little things to bring it back to factory original or should I just drive it like it is until it finally dies? Thanks to all who responded to my last post and my apologies to the Moderator – I know you have a job to do and I should have read the rules – I have never been very good at reading or rules for that matter.

I wouldn't take a 38000 mile original truck and "drive it till it dies" It's worth quite a bit like it is. If your looking for a daily driver sell this and get one, otherwise you are taking a valuable truck and losing value with every mile.

I think you should do what needs to be done to make it a DD. I don't think you should drive it until it "dies". It's too nice for that. A lot of guys would kill to start with something like that; not to mention the fact that it has family history. If I were you I would keep it going. Just my .02

I would fix up the little things and drive it. Keep it as a survivor. It will be worth much more as original than it would if you repainted it or something.

HHmm....loooks like the color is Ocra to me (like a mustard Yellow) lot of guys like that color, you should also take a closeup picture of the tag on the inside of the glovebox door, that has alot of good info about the truck's options. We love these trucks here, so I think the consensus will be to fix her up & lover her like grandpa & grandma must have, heck you could drive it like it is for awhile if you don't have the money to put in it yet, I like em low with shiny wheels & tires, but it really depends on what style you like, if you just want it to be stock, thats fine too, either way it will be worth good money down the road, these are amazing vehicles, I've owned several brand new trucks & I was lucky to get 5 to 10 years out of them, my 71 is 36 years old & is in fantastic condition, & is pretty much a Hot Rod.

I would fix the little things, polish it up, detail it and drive it, but not as a daily driver. Drive it to car shows and cruise in's and for special occasions. Keep it as nice as you can and try to keep the mileage down. It will be a good investment and like money in the bank....

Doc said it best!

I would maybe clean and paint the wheels and use some tire cleaner but thats about it brutha! She looks great as is. You could do things like new cab bushings, window rubbers, door seals, etc. and still keep the survivor look.

Restore to 100% stock and just drive it to car/truck shows! Buy an older clean truck to turn into a hot rod. They are only new like that once...preserve it as best as you can!

Send pics of the interior, engine, glove box door...we want to see it all!

I know nothing about fixing the rocker panel - is it expensive and will they be able to make the paint match - are there any other ways to fix it other that cutting it out?

I don't think it's very expensive, although I guess it depends on where you go to have it done. It's relatively straight-forward. Replacing the rocker altogether is the best way to fix it IMO. I've never heard of patching one.

Welcome to the board from a tad North of you .. I read your comment about rules and chuckled.. Keep this in mind Sometimes it is easier to ask forgiveness, than permission Enjoy your truck and I too think it is defineatly worth spending some money getting it the way you want it. What is real special about your truck is that it was your Grandpas, and to me that makes your truck priceless.

Yeah. I'd agree there. My wife and I inherited her grandfather's `68 after he passed. He was original owner too. Ours isn't in as good of condition, but we are in the process of making full restoration plans. It's going to be a beautiful thing.

Get the rocker fixed.The paint can be matched.If it`s off alittle,it won`t matter much down there.I`d get the full wheelcovers for that truck.Those are`76-up caps.The color`s hard to tell in the picture.I was thinking it looked like Wheatland Yellow.

(I'm sure you are) But be thankful that this gem fell in your lap. I agree with most of the guys on here. Do what you have to do so that it will be as reliable as possible, and keep it just like Grandpa left it.

Thanks for all your comments - I spend most of last night taking most everything out of the cab and trying to get all the years of dust and mouse crap out of it. Can anyone recomend a cleaning product? Is something like 409 ok? Should the metal on the dash and doors be waxed? Almost lastly is there anyone in my area - Great Falls, MT that can recomend where or how to fix the rocker? Lastly special-K what type of covers are you refering? It says on the sticker inside the glove box that it came with crome hub caps - I cant understand why they wouldn't be the right ones?

The correct hubcaps will look like these, except with blue bowties where these show gold. The dogdish style is what probably came on it, the full wheel covers (with fake lugnuts) were optional. I prefer the dog dish style with a white steel wheel myself. It could be your Grampa's original hubcaps got "borrowed" or he lost one or 2 along the way and what you have now is what he replaced them with? Those are mid-70 to mid-80 dogdish caps on there now.

You can try hubcaps.com, ebay, or a WTB post on parts board ($25 yearly fee to do so). The yellow centers can be painted and IMO, will be "correct" enough. I believe the yellow centered dog dish caps I posted a pic of came on 73-75 1/2 ton pickups, so don't limit your search to just 69-72 trucks. Be aware you want the 1/2 version, not the larger, albiet similar, 3/4 ton variety.

Good choice on keeping it close to original. There are precious few survivors still around, though there are plenty of "well loved" examples to be hot-rodded.

Leave it the way it is. Don't take it apart and then lose interest in it like sooooo many do, then what you wind up with a perfectly good truck, all taken apart and probably sitting outside somewhere.
