Cranking motor from under the hood
Is there an easy way to turn over a motor while under the hood? In the past I have used one of those remote starts that connect to the starter, but with this 67 C-10 that is a royal pain to attach. The starter solenoid is buried behind the frame and exhaust manifold, my hands just will not fin in there! Sure would be helpful for setting initial timing... Thanks in advance.

So I suppose it would be just as bad laying a screwdriver or something across the positive/negative of the starter solenoid? (Just as you needed to of course).

well, if you are doing this a lot, you could run a wire from a 2 prong plug to the bat cable on the starter, and then the one from the other side of the plug to the S terminal, and then put the same style plug on your remote starter... or even mount a push button under the hood.

I installed a remote solenoid on my inner fender, so its as easy as taking a screwdriver to the pos and neg there. Downside is that it is that easy for anyone to do, if you get my drift. Need to come up with a non-invasive way to secure the hood.

There is always the purple 10 ga. wire that runs to s terminal on the starter for almost every chevrolet.... chevy has been pretty consistant on this color wire, its a fat purple wire , I believe you can pull it from the loom that is on the back of the fire wall, I would not just poke a hole in it with a tee pin and hook remote starter to it and positive battery, but rather maybe cut it and make a correct splice connection for your remote starter , I have seen many guys just jam somthing into the wire to tap into it and leave the hole exposed, not a good idea, especially if you live where it snows and salt sets in, it will take no time at all for this open exposed wire to corrode and gain high resistance and eventually major voltage drop and even break the circuit.

You could always just pull the plugs out and turn it pretty easily by the crank w/o stripping the bolt?

yes, but considering you live in Minnisota? you might want to keep the exposed wire that you cut, (however you decide to tap into this wire) sealed or properly tapped into, so as not to allow corrossion to set in, yes the big purple (10 ga. wire should be located in the loom at rear of firewall and one lead from remote start to it and other to a positive sourse, either on the back of alternator or positive battery and than push button and it should crank, keep in mind if its a stick, it will run you over if its in gear and be careful that you are aware of fan and belts are clear of those vital human body parts before cranking with a remote button,

All Correct except the fact it will not run this way. It will turn over just not start as you are looking for. you will have to make another switch 12 volt loop to the ignition/dizzy for it to actually run. RJ22

If he has points ignition it will start and run as long as he has the solenoid engaged. If it is an automatic he could just jump from the neutral start switch to any twelve volt source and it will crank the engine. The original post sounds like he wants to just crank the engine to set the points unless I am missing something. A little more info would be helpful.

This has been discussed previously from a different point of view. That discussion revolved around the started getting 'heat soaked'. The fix for that was installing a ford starter solenoid, and bringing the factory wiring over to that and jumping the chevy solenoid below.

Fenny thats what he has now. He's looking for an easier way to hook something like this product up other than by way of getting into the tight area between exh manifold and frame.
I think best choice is kill two birds with one stone and install the remote selinoid on the fenderwell or werever you chose. You will the have very convenient hook up for remote starter and cure any future issues with starter heat soak.

I use a remote starter solenoid. It's a hand held unit with push button switch using 5ft leads and aligator clips that clip to the starter allowing you to turn the motor from outside the cab. I use it for finding TDC or adjusting valves. Just kill the ignition 12v source. They're not cheap, about $75 but nice to have if you do this a lot.
