Does this look like an $850 repair?

I'm not a body man, but I guess it depends on the labor. A new bedside and tailgate can be had for less than that, but by the time you prime and paint it would probably be around that, maybe more.

does to me. maybe more..

the more pulling done with the right tools the less body filler

when i painted my truck 1gal of paint (baby blue) was 150.00 and that was the cheap stuff

that did not include the white paint..
the hardener
the fish eye preventer

the primer

the thinner

no sand paper
no tape
no masking paper
tack cloth

the shop
the electric

you need the tail light and housing
side marker
tail light bezal ----- can only buy a set
bottom trim
bottom trim clips
rear bumper

trim's got to come off.. paint complete side or blend..old paint ?

the guy to do it

that stuff add's up quick

Actually you should post this over in the body paint section. Ive seen lessor damage cost more than that...but thats on a newer car so maybe thats different.

That price was to "straighten" the bed side and primer only!! Oh yeah-and BONDO! I have the parts to replace the damaged ones. The tailgate is flawless.

I agree. That is not an easy spot to straighten. $850 sounds like a good deal IF it is done right.

Good body work is not cheap as Kevin said and a little bondo is not a bad thing when the right work is under it. Straighten & primer only though. Seems a little high at 850 when you are suppling the replacement parts. just my .02

Thats high to me but these bedsides are tough metal especially in the corners. I would estimate the dent at around 12 hours to repair and at 40.00 an hour out here that is 480.00 plus 50.00 to shoot some primer on it so 850.00 is high, or he is high, with no paint.

$850 sounds a little high. You could probably get a complete other bed for less than that. Shoot you could be lucky enough to score an entire truck for less!

I could agree to that, of course even if it were in perfect shape, but a different color, by the time it was prepped and painted to match, we'd be talking $850 again, but that's what's wrong with the whole picture. I had my buddie take my 85 4x4 down to a body shop he was getting setup to buy. The current owner, his friend, took one look at it and said "tell your buddy he can't afford me". He saw a $4000 pickup, figured a complete paint job with all the prep time, etc, he would have to charge me $3000. (Most 85's aren't worth $7000).The cost of paint jobs are extreme because the body shop industry can make so much more off of insurance work. Most people that pay for a proffesional paint job will find they'll never get their money out of it come resale time. I'm talking about vehicles that are just run of the mill, nothing special kinda stuff. That's why I'm determined to learn to do my own bodywork, paint, etc. Makes the hobby more affordable. JMO.

Yup, Sad as it is, I'd say it's a fair price. You didn't say what he charges per hour, but in a lot of places $60-80 is the going rate. It doesn't take long to burn up that kind of money in labor alone. That dent is in a tough spot also. I just paid my bodyman for 11 hours of his time to straighten the Studebaker fender, plus materials at the cost of $520. He charges $35 which is a heck of a deal. Good Luck.

I think a few missed that he was suppling parts and that there was only the primer being sprayed. I agree with ya 72CSTC5 & N2TRUX I'm no body man by any means but I worked in a body shop for three years just decided wrenching was more my style.

I dont think its high at all. For one if that come into MY stall with 12hrs someone would be getting a supplement, as I think 12 is low.
Even thou, at 12hrs at 50 bucks per hr thats 600. Depending on your location in CA 50 bucks is cheap, I know of areas that are in the 80 dollar range.
Now you figure say 2hr to mask and prime at 50 bucks, we have a total of 700 bucks.
150 bucks off from someone who looked at it in person vs someone who is looking at it thou a computer screen is pretty darn close IMO.
