I finally decided on an engine for '69 2WD 1/2 ton Burb. It is going to be 454. I am knew to the BBCs. Any general info as far as mounting this thing up that you guys can give is appreciated. I believe it currently has the tall valve covers. I need short valve covers correct?? I will be using a brake booster from a 72 3/4ton. It also has roller rockers, so are short valve covers still an option with those rockers?? Also, I have already installed the front crossmember/suspension in from a '77 Chevy 1/2ton 2WD. Can I use those engine stands with the 454, & just use BBC motor mounts?? One more question - Which is a better combo?? a 454 with a 400 tranny & a 3.73 posi with 295/50/15s (26.6 inches) or that may eventually have a 700 or same combo but keep the 400 with 3.08 gears. I understand that BBCs usually have enough low end torque to compensate for the highway gears. The truck will be probably be a 60/40 split from highway to city driving with the 60% being city.

you will be needing those tall valve covers.. with roller rockers

they make a smaller booster that will work..

400's are great transmissions.

the bbc does need to sit different in the engine bay.

sounds like a GREAT MOVE.. you will love the big block.. they rock

Thanks for the info...I will check out the FAQ section.....hopefully it will do pretty good...It has Edelbrock Performer heads/roller rockers, & TBI injection converted to multiport injection with the Edelbrock kit. It also has a CC 262 cam. Still undecided if I want to yank & sell the fuel injection stuff & go with a larger cam & carburator...decisions, decisions, any input?? The only thing I think I need for the fuel injection is a new chip & fuel pump. He already has Edelbrock headers on it, but I am not sure if they will fit yet. He is including his existing computer & wire harness in the deal. I assume the O2 sensor is in one of the headers, we will see on Saturday. That is when I will pick it up.

Use the EFI. I just have a stock TBI and it was by far the best mod I've ever done. The throttle response and drivability are so much better than a carb.
Are they full roller rockers or just roller tips? If they're just roller tips you can probably run the short valve covers. I have comp roller tips and no clearance problems with the short covers.

I believe they are full roller rockers. I will find out for sure on Saturday. I am hoping they are only roller tip, I don't want to have to use a 1/2ton power brake booster. I don't suppose CC roller tips from a small block are the same for a big block. I will have to look that up....

Also, I have full rollers with a 3/4ton booster. The M/T valve covers just had to have the 'oil deflectors' (pointy things inside) removed.

Thanks for the info Frizzle Fry....This is the kinda info I miss out on because I can't keep up with working & reading all this info on my off time. I was reading all this info, even going back & catching up on the posts if I missed a few days...can't do it anymore.....

Didn't I read earlier that you work for Intel in Oregon?? I work for Air Products at Intel F12/22/32 in Chandler, AZ.

I am here in az and can help a little on the advice part, just PM me and we can communicate that way, so you don't have to keep tracking threads! I use full roller rockers with a short valve cover, just glue one gasket on top of another, and they'll clear, you can still use the factory AC with tha set-up as well.
