On car Brake Lathe incident
This is just a reminder to be careful, no matter how comfortable you may be with some safety is key. I've set up on car lathes more times than I can count. Thursday I was showing the new guy how to set it up, and barely touched the rotor on accident, this pulled my hand down and trapped it between the caliper bracket and the rotor, stopping the machine. I had to turn it off and use a prybar to rotate the rotor back to get my hand free.
This picture is from this morning, of the 17 stitches I had to get...

OUCH! That was the proverbial rock and the hard place. I can not stress enough to my students about safety, if you don't mind I'd like to use this in class.

You may use it woodridge. It put me out of work for a week or so... It hurts n well makes me pretty much worthless unable to do anything for a week or so... Just goes out to remind everyone, you can never be to careful....

i wasnt there so i dont know specifics but i have to ask- pro cut junk lathe right? (deep rooted hatred for those  )in hindsight, would the pry bar have been easier, or use your free hand to loosen where the adapter hooks onto the machine so the rotor would turn freely? i'm sure in the heat of the moment i probably would have a hard time remembering to shut it off, but it kind of makes my mind churn in a "what if" way, when i was just using one of those today on a 06 hhr.

It was a procut 9000, I love the machine when used right. It was shut off and unscrewed from the adapter but my hand was uhm wedged....
I'm left handed so yep it's the hand i write with, was fun signing in and filling out forms at the emergency center... Even funner filling out the workmans comp stuff the next day....

ah so it wasnt a thing of being stuck because the machine wont turn backwards. (i just love how it locks up the rearend on a K1500 locking rear and you have to fight the driveshaft out).
i guess the machine isnt all THAT bad, i just have had a lot of bad luck out of ours. could be a matter of a cheap shop that fixes none of there equipment hope it heals quick with no long term problems! |

I've worked around mechanical equipment my whole life and the best (and most painful) lesson I have learned is.....No matter how good you are, lose concentration for a brief second and machines WILL EAT YOUR LUNCH! BTW: how'd the brake lathe fare?

its easy to get to comfortable around machinery like that... one day i was using a bridgeport, went to reach across it to grab somthing and hit my hand into the cutter... sucked
