Breathing in exhaust fumes
When I open the windows I'm bringing in exhaust fumes from the space between the bottom of the hatch and top of the tailgate. I have a tailgate trim piece I bought awhile back but in looking at it today, it's holes aren't in the right place and it isn't actually wide enough.
Anyone done anything creative to seal this location?

Re: Breathing in exhaust fumes
A PO put some adhesive back weatherstip on the tailgate hatch stop, It looks kind of like the stuff you can get at the hardware/home improvement store.

There's that peel and stick 1/2" foam tape you can get just about anywhere.Try that 1st,should work.

Re: Breathing in exhaust fumes
Is your exhaust going straight out the back or the side?
If their straight out the back, almost nothing you try will be 100%. Putting the tail pipes out the side is the only way I've ever found to cure it. |

Re: Breathing in exhaust fumes
I took Luv's advice and yanked the top in May and that put an end to my exhaust smelling days.
Course winter is on it's way but I happened to pick up something slight used a couple months ago that I think it will solve my hard top exhaust problem. Don't want to brag or anything but do the letters S T C mean anything?

Re: Breathing in exhaust fumes
Try one of those spoilers that defect the airflow that comes across the top down the back to keep window clear.

Re: Breathing in exhaust fumes
The exhaust presently does exit behind the K5 but in a few weeks I will be doing the exhuast and it will be side exit.
I hear you on taking the top off! That is on the agenda once it gets a little warmer around here. I threw a little masking tape on the hatch to the tailgate last night cause I just hate breathing the exhaust smell - looks nice and ghetto but it will work until I make something to cover that area.

Re: Breathing in exhaust fumes
I put the exaust out the side too...just for that reason.
I also had to stuff a long pc of foam between the bottom of the tail gate and the floor. In the summer time i tryed driving around with the hatch up to get some air in for the people in the back. Can't do that. The fumes come right in. So i mounted a fan back there for them. The draw backs of a blazer.

Re: Breathing in exhaust fumes
Hey folks, I'm resurrecting this thread because I did a search on weatherstripping for the tail gate and didn't find much. Today I installed part 38-6963, end gate lower seal, from LMC and used part 38-0792, loctite black weatherstrip adhesive and man did it make a difference. My exhaust exits at the rear corners like the pic vtblazer put up and because of the gap between my tailgate and bed, my '71 Blazer always smelled like exhaust. Today after everything dried I went for a test drive and WOW... Should have done this a long time ago...
Tomorrow I'm going to tackle the upper window weatherstripping on my Blazer top. It's pretty bad and has been leaking, so I'm going to give it a try. Later, Tony.

Re: Breathing in exhaust fumes
Forgot to quote "STC mean anything to you". In other words what does it mean?

Re: Breathing in exhaust fumes
Ah, now I get it. S T C means Specialty Top Company and I was trying to not brag that I lucked out a while back when boardmember LivRat I believe it was posted up a craigslist add he had seen for a hardly used STC Fastrack soft top. I bought it for $300 and so now I probably won't be using my hard top any more.

Re: Breathing in exhaust fumes
Congrats on the top! Like VT says, if the exhaust exits out the rear you'll have problems. Turn it out the side. Besides, any self respecting off-roader would never run the exhaust out the rear. If you get stuck and have to rock the truck back and forth you can pack the exhaust full of mud, water, or both!
