Re: what year rearend is best?

iam going to drive it alot! the motor is nothing very special. it made 490hp and is a pump gas motor. the trans is a 700r4 that i had built for the motor.
i am not going to drag race it, just want it to hold up. is there a rear end that is easy to find and replace the stock unit? thanks again for the help! matt

you might want to ask for advice from the person who built your transmission for you, or your engine builder..

I do however like the dana third members, if your doing a swap, you can get it rebuilt at the same time and have it geared however you want..

The stock rearend is mighty strong. You'll be hard pressed to hook up hard enough to break it.

you could always replace the axle shafts and carrier with stronger units and not have any issues. You should have a chevy 12-bolt...

Even if it's built up, I'd say the tranny is the weak link.

Re: what year rearend is best?

Chevy truck 12 bolt with a 3.42 posi or a 3.73 posi will serve your needs quite well, and for a long time. With the TH700's overdrive, I wouldn't go numerically lower than 3.42 and for the power and useage you've got in mind, a 12 bolt will be fine. A Ford 9-inch would be superior, but besides being a F#$%, it's overkill for your situation.

My Elky's BBC/TH700/3.55 combo turns about 2200 RPM at 60MPH and 2400 at 70 as I recall.
