Planning on getting some aluminum header gaskets when shopping for them i noticed they have square and oval. I have a 70s block and heads from around the same period. What are the dates or what that determines the head port?

They are most likely the square or rectangle. I use manifold gaskets on mine with great results.

I assume you are talking about small block, most likely you have the square port, round ports were not used that much until you get to the LSx, and "D" ports are mainly LT1 but also the FASTburn 385 and a couple others. We have them in our store as cheap as you will find good ones for

Ask for "Percey's aluminum gaskets. They are a little more expensive but are reusable, life time guarantee and they work!

So if my headers are oval and my heads are square should I use the square ones?

i just put some aluminized gaskets on my 406 i also sprung the the header lock bolts that have a little wire that goes between everytwo bolts made by SPECTRE worth it i tightened them once and haven't touched them since
