Re: my 71 daily driver first truck

nice starter truck you got there, and just to let you know that even though the propane is cheaper and actually higher octane, ive heard that it ruins the engine bucause theres no lube from the fuel, but i could be wrong, but keep us posted on your progress

While I have not researched this much at all, i have been told the exact oposite, that it INCREASES the life of the engine due to the fact that the fuel is already vaporised and remains that way, therefor it doesn't contaminate the oil. That's why fork lifts get there oil chainged every 3 years or so, and it is still gold.

Looks good. I am glad to see that someone else who is younger is into these trucks. Most kids want hondas or brand new cars.

Nice truck... I also have a '71 and it's my daily driver I'm only 17. I know where you're at a year ago I was in your same shoes... it takes a lot of work but that's the best part! If you have any questions lemme know... I've been through the same process.

I've heard that you have to break a new engine in on gasoline, then run propane, otherwise the rings never seat.

Re: my 71 daily driver first truck

I say if you got it dirt cheap you stole it.

Very nice truck.

I say fix whats aleing it, I.E. rust and keep it close to stock looking. Looks GR8 the way it is other than the rust in the ussual places.

Nice truck. Stick with it. I started driving mine when I was 16 years old, too. Occasionaly I used to sweet talk the Chevron card from my mom.

Re: my 71 daily driver first truck

Keep your truck on gas and propane both. Run 2 tanks propane and one gas. That is what the recommended method is on new trucks equipped with propane. If you run straight propane add a oil injection pump.

Re: my 71 daily driver first truck

2 things. First, great looking truck. Especially for the "dirt cheap" price tag. I agree with everyone on here that you should keep it stock (or somewhat close to that) and a chrome bumper. I bought my first 68 chevy longbed when I was 15. I sold it cuz i "couldn't afford the gas." Now gas is $2 a gallon more than it was back then.

Second, my grandfather used to have a truck that he pulled a 5th wheel camper with that ran on propane. We could switch it from gasoline to propane and you could definitely tell a difference in power and performance with the propane. You just can't park in some parking garages with a propane car.

Re: my 71 daily driver first truck

welcome..happy to see another gmc.. as for the propane part, if it is not already set up to run dual fuel, you better save alot fo money up, it is not cheap to set one up to run dual fuels..propane will run cleaner and get better mog, but if you live in the mountains, you will want to be able to switch to gas to pull big mountains...and on propane, the motor wil last alot longer.... i hope you keep it a gmc, best looking trucks out there imo..
if your gonna convert it here is one site i have bookmarked,
http://www.technocarb.com/

i think i got more if you need them, not sure though, i researched it a couple of yrs ago and just couldnt come up with the initial cash to do it, still a god way to go though

Re: my 71 daily driver first truck

Looks good how it is but id tweak a few things..first id fix all the rust on er and coat everything under tyhe cab and the whole cab floor with some type of undercoating to last a real long time ...then if it was mine id work on the interior and even tho i decide to go white with orange SS stripes on mine id paint that the original color..looks real nice..same color as mine is stock..mines trashed tho and i got my paint colors from the goodmark first gen camaro..dress it with some chrome and mabey give it a slight rake..and of course got to have the Cragar SS rims
