Today I saw this in a parking lot: 1969 or '70 CST, SWB, big block (had the 400 badges), auto, A/C, the works! It didn't have the tach, but not many do. Looked like might have been the original paint. Wasn't perfect, but body was straight. Only things I saw that weren't stock were rallye wheels and different mirrors. Most wouldn't have noticed, but the front wheels were 5 lug and the rear were 6 lug. Guess it was updated to front disc brakes (no, I didn't crawl under to verify!). I would have loved to have hung around to talk to him, but had to go. This was the first time I've seen one of these that was not restored or rodded. Kinda made my day!

That was a rare truck.
Too bad you didn't chat with the owner, probably was a guy but you never know these days in Texas.
There are usually some good truck stories around these trucks.
Most folks are very friendly and enjoy talking with others that show an interest in their rides.

There is a guy down the street from me that has a 69 cst 4x4, and my dad saw a swb c/10 cst with a 402 a few days ago. I have seen a lot of rare tucks lately though, I have seen 4 longhorns (all really clean) in the past month too. There is a another longhorn that belongs to someone that lives near me too, but it has so many dents that it wouldn't be worth trying to fix it.

Well, hard to believe this, but I passed another big block truck today on the highway. This one was also a '69 or '70, but a C/20 (or was it a custom?), not a CST. Also in good original condition. It was a work truck, though. Had a pipe rack on the back and loaded down with equipment and supplies.

I'm sure the 396/402 made for a good work truck, but how much better are they than the 4bbl 350 in stock trim? Am I missing out on much performance by having the small block? (other than missing a few gas stations, that is!) As I recall, the big block did not have that much more rated torque or HP.

I pulled the original 396 out of my truck to put the current 350 in it. Granted it was an all stock 325 HP 396 that had well over 100,000 miles on it but the compression tested good and the heads had been rebuilt at some time plus the carb was in tip top shape. In other words it was a good running engine. Used a bit of oil but most older motors do. Anyway I really dont notice much of a difference power wise. It had a bit more low end torque but the small block handily out revs it and pulls harder after 60 mph. I do get a LOT better mileage and since this is a daily driver that gets a good 250-300 miles a week that was my major concern when I put in the small block. If I was going to build a big block the 2 bolt main cast crank small port 396 would have been my absolute last choice for the motor to build. When I retire this truck to occasionally driven status I'll probably throw a 454 in it. My old man owes me a motor and has a few steel crank 4 bolt 454 cores laying around
