How do I find out the gear ratio??????????

Any one point in the the right direction. I need to know how to find out what the gear ratio of my rear axle is. Thanks

pop off the cover, look for the stampings of the 2 numbers on the driven gear... or, just count the teeth on both the drive and the driven... then you divide one into the other, and that's your gear ratio.
Your oil is probably in dire need of chainging, it is neglected even more than brake fluid is, and is probably only working at 50% or so.

I couldn't find any stampings on mine when I pulled the cover, so I just counted and divided. It was no big deal. And like Andy said, you need to change the fluid anyhow.

if you need to know exactly what it is, counting is the way to go.
i wanted to know, just so i new, so i spun the driveshaft, and had a buddy tell me when the tire rotated one complete turn.
3 and about 3/4 of a turn = 3.73 gears, i assume.

I agree with 69halfton, that method will get you close enough for government work. I've even put a mark on one of the tire's inside so I could watch it as I turned the drive shaft.

Another way to tell the ratio of the rear gears is by the code stamped on the passenger side tube of the rear end housing. The first picture shows the area of the housing where the code is stamped and the second picture is of the code number itself. When You have the code just use the first two or three letters ('67-'69 have two letters & '70-'72 have three) and look it up here in the axle codes section.

The letters TDE on this one tells me it is a 307:1 - 1/2 ton assembly
