Changing stock gas tank advice
I plan on replacing my stock tank w/ a reprod sometime this summer due to rust inside. I plan on getting a new sending unit and harness as well. Is there anything else I need or should consider while I'm at it? Thanks in advance. sb

Re: Changing stock gas tank advice
Oh, and I plan on staying w/ the in-cab tank mainly because I don't have the $$ or skills to do the rear conversion. Thanks again.

Re: Changing stock gas tank advice
Pulled a tank last night. Really easy. 8 bolts for seat 8 bolts for gas tank.
remove wire and reinstall.

Re: Changing stock gas tank advice
Couple of things:
If you're not careful, the gas gauge wire is real easy to pinch, ground or connect poorly. Make sure the ohms on the new sending unit matches the ohms on the old one. Otherwise the gas gauge will read differently than it did. Watch out for the rubber o-ring seal that seals the sending unit in. Make sure it's sealed properly. If there's a vent involved, make sure the hose to it is in good condition. Good luck.

Re: Changing stock gas tank advice
You also might want to get another rubber seal for the filler neck on the body. They can be tough removing without damaging the old one. It also might feel like its stuck and theres still something holding it after you get all the bolts out. You just need to pry on it a little.

Re: Changing stock gas tank advice
I just insalled one from LMC a month ago. I had to open up the mounting holes a little and I had to tweak the sending unit retainer ring for a tighter fit. It all fits and looks nice with no leaks or fuel smell. I did have to order a different filler cap for the new tank though. My old one was too big and wouldn't fit.
The new sending unit came with a new rubber sealing ring. Last edited by Texasdeere; 06-01-2007 at 07:54 PM. |

Re: Changing stock gas tank advice
Ok, I don't know the years for this, but some tanks are vented through a charcoal canister under the hood of the truck, and some simply have a vented gas cap. Make sure you order the correct tank/fuel cap combination. There's been quite a few "my truck runs for 5 mins. dies, starts, runs 5 mins and dies" posts
Also, I'm not sure if the extra vent is on the tank itself, or the fuel sending unit... maybe someone else can chime in... The 67 to whatevers are the vented caps and the whatevers to 72 are the vented charcoal canister... I know that helps a lot Sorry I don't know more, I just know to make sure to get the same stuff.
