AFR Angle Plugs '77 4x4 and Headers... What's the answer

So, anyone have headers and AFR 195's with angle plugs (think it's L98 angle on these). Truck is a '77 with 4 wheel drive.

Looking for the cheapest, and 1 5/8" or 1 3/4", and full length (not required full length, though).

I can't tell if Patriot H8048 will fit angle plug. It says it's for D-Port Bow tie, and I'm assuming it will fit AFR's D-port and angle plugs.

Almost all the others say "will not fit angle plug heads".

Edit: How about Hedman 69099?? Will they fit a 77? What changed around 1982 to make a different header?

So, what fits?? And will they need a mini-starter? Other mods??

Thanks.

I guess I'll find out the hard way. Seems like the hedman's will work though.

L98 heads are str8 plugs, Bowtie heads are angled plugs, had a set on my 66 Malibu. Best way is to find a set of headers and see if they fit, I dont know model numbers and specs of the different headers. Big name comapnies like Hedman and Hooker Im sure would have some that fit. Call them up or try Summit or Jegs for info.

Re: AFR Angle Plugs '77 4x4 and Headers... What's the answer

L98 Iron (as found on 3rd gen camaros/firebirds) heads are straight, yes (got one in my GTA). L98 Aluminum (corvette) heads are angled. Some aftermarket heads are very angled. The ones I have are "L98 Angle" 1038's from AFR.

I'm "pretty sure" these hedman 69099's will fit. D-port even (which the AFR's have). I'll post back a reply if they do or don't. Will install them in about a month when I get back to the US. Problem is, is that I'll only be back for 2 weeks, so don't have time to do it again.

Thanks for the advice. I already ordered the hedmans, though. I think I saw in Summit or something that they are for 67-92, D-Port, and fit Chevy Aluminum Angle plug heads (although I ordered them through Jegs). The pictures also show the first tube is very horizontal, which is good.

Ureckme - Do you happen to know which part number? Thanks.

I ordered the 69099, but it's about the same as 69090 as far as I can tell, except D-Port.

Re: AFR Angle Plugs '77 4x4 and Headers... What's the answer

Well, the 69099's fit great with the AFR D-ports, and Angle plugs. All spark plugs are a direct shot with a spark plug socket on an extension with a ratchet.

Got it running:
355 roller block, forged pistons, LT4 hot cam,
195 AFR angle plug heads, 74cc chambers, 9.2:1 with a .015 rubber coated steel shim on .025 deck - hoping it seals forever...
Professional Products Cyclone Plus intake for 1205 gasket
Holley 670 street avenger, Holley blue electric pump (LT4 hot cam has no lobe for mechanical pump), and regulator.
HEI still, new radiator (but rigged it to fit, since I accidentally bought a 19 inch tall one, but stock was 21"),
2000 RPM stall converter for the th350 - the $99 special from jegs - but, works great with the engine anyway.
2-1/4" dual exhaust by dynomax I think - just had to weld the ball flanges after some slight cutting.

Pulls great! Carb jetting is a little lean on the primaries during cruise (15.5:1), and a little rich on the secondaries 11.7:1 up in the higher RPMs. Great for economy and exhaust valve cooling. Didn't bother rejetting. Just had to tweak the idle air bleeds for 13.5-14:1 idle. Choke doesn't seem to choke much, though - still needs some tweaking.

Truck is not worth even half or probably even 1/4 (fully rusted body) of the engine, but it was just for something to do when I was home on vacation (I work in China). Plus, the engine can be used later, in something better.

Pics in next post, if they load correctly...

Re: AFR Angle Plugs '77 4x4 and Headers... What's the answer

Oh yeah, some comp pro-mag rockers, chromoly pushrods, a 4 hole carb spacer (to get clearance for a fitting for the trans vacuum modulator), a whacky oil pan with a kickout, stage 8 header bolts with locks (heat cycled and re-torqued 3 times before locks installed), and a sheath on the number 5 wire so I could run the wires straight up.

Another oh yeah: The headers just barely touch the spring shackles at the collectors. A hammer helped it clear by just a little.

The professional products intake is a gem. It matched the 1205 gasket perfectly. The trans vacuum modulator fitting location is not conducive to a holley though - thus the 4 hole spacer. Has a rear water crossover as well - should help keep'r cool, and keep the fuel atomized well - with help from the exhaust crossover. Kit came with intake gaskets and bolts, and plugs. Used The Right Stuff on the china wall. But, there's a very slight coolant leak when warm at a front corner - musta been too shy with the right stuff in that area.
