Any idea what this horn cap came from?
This horn cap came out of the truck I bought 67 C10 stepside.
Several of the plastic tabs are broken, so doesn't fit in the wheel so good anymore. I like the style of the cap, so like to find one like it someday. This one is pretty pitted. Looks like the white plastice that attaches inside the wheel can be replaced. I see the 67 replacement caps have a black rubber that attaches the cap to the wheel, so this looks very unorginal to me. I ordered a cap when I got the truck and what I recieved was the plane chrome cap that proabaly came with a 67 c10. I thought the cap I had was an original, shows how much I knew when I got into this hobby. So anyway trying to figure out what I have here. Perhaps a car cap? Oh yeah, there are no casting numbers on it. Last edited by johnymac; 09-16-2002 at 06:35 PM. |

It looks like the one that was on my '67, but I cannot vouch for its originality.

It's original to '67s and '68s. My '67 C20 has one and I htink it came with the Custom interior option group. I think in '68 it only came with the CST package.

Great!!
Thanks so much for the info.
Do you know if these can be bought anywhere? I like the cap, but mine is really pitted and needs a new backing to it. Thanks again. |

My experience tells me it's a 67 CST horn button, one year only and hard to find. Most are chrome or brushed steel with the rubber backing to hold it in. Broken tabs are common on these.

OK I'll concede that they probably don't come on '68s, because I've never actually seen one on a '68. Just thought I had read on the board that they came on a '68 CST.
But my '67 isn't a CST, and it's a very "unaltered" truck--the first owner didn't ever do much to it in it's short 69K mile lifetime, so I have no reason to suspect the horn button was changed. I have both Custom groups and the Custom Camper nameplate. Would it more likely come with the Custom interior group or the Custom Camper nameplate? Ben

That cap came with the 67 Chevy Customs and the CSTs. GMC Had one also for their Super customs in in 67.... WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

Custom Camper is only HD springs (coil or leaf) HD shocks, and a sway bar. That's it.

Custom Camper was kind of a ripoff option if you ask me. It was only a nameplate, didn't actually come with anything but badges. Those options are listed separately and were present anyway, without the nameplate. They were just prerequisites to getting the Custom Camper nameplate. So the nameplate is kinda like a "certification" that it's a bonfide camper truck.
I just thought maybe it went along with the badges, since everyone was associating the horn button with CST which mine wasn't.

dad's 67 K-20 has the flat horn cap that you mentioned, just flat face with Chevrolet stamped in it, possibly says Chevrolet Division, but I can't remember for sure.

Thanks again for the info.
My truck has the custom option, not sure if the cap was changed? I would like to get a replacement retainer for it. Anyone ever hear where to purchase these? I have looked around and only see the black rubber retainers for these year trucks. Think this could be rechromed? I am not sure with the platistic center if this would even be possible. |

Let's see, LMC sells them, I think Chevy Duty does too.
I bet most the companies on the home page of this site would have. I think there under 2 bucks, or maybe 3? Good luck. Ok Chevy Duty $1.99 number 27-23. Last edited by johnymac; 09-18-2002 at 06:49 PM. |

Every original 68 horn button I've seen is always a brushed flat aluminum (SP) type finish whether it's a CST, Custom or basic truck. I've never seen any kind of a shiny chrome horn button on an original 68.
I'm not sure but 67's where finished chrome and came in the basic plain style or fancy CST/Custom? style.

I know the 68 had the plain one (it's actually copper that has been plated with aluminum).
My restoration catalog says a bright horn button was available on CST trucks in 67. |

how did you come to find that out ? wild.. bright horn-button cap is listed as part of the Z84 Custom Sport truck option in 67 and also in the Custom Appearance Option Z61 in 67 but not in the Custom Comfort Option Z62 in 67 keep in mind that 67 was oddball and custom comfort and appeaance was split into two separate options, Z61 for appearance and Z62 for comfort, were combined together into Z62 for 68-72 years and the bright horn cap dropped in 68 also. look on your glove box SPID label list and look for Z84 and Z61 |

I tried wet sanding my plain-jane horn button so I could polish it and make it seem like chrome...now it is clean brushed alluminum with a copper edge on one end.
