Help me decide y'all...
Ok, so I recently parked my 72 c10 due to gas mileage and prices, and started driving an 87 ferd ranger. My bother-in-law wants to trade me his carburated LS1 for my 87 ranger.
Now here's the quandry, do I make the trade and put the LS1 in my 72 c10? How hard of a setup would this be. Obviously, it's a lot easier than a fuel injected LS1, but still, I know there are differences... like the motor mounts for one. Would you make the trade? What kind of gas mileage could I expect out of a carbed LS1? Seems it should be better than the older motors due to a more efficient design, but not as good as MPFI. I mean, the whole reason I parked the 72 in the first place was because of gas mileage. Oh, and this is a built LS1 at that, with cam and worked heads. Oh, and I think I can land a 700R4 (that needs work) with it as well. Oh the pain of trying to decide. Help. Toad

Re: Help me decide y'all...
Tough call, only you will be able to decide on this one. The motor would be pretty cool, but if your truck breaks now you still have transportation...

Re: Help me decide y'all...
The LS1 dosen't have a provision for a fuel pump so you will need an electric one. You will also need the electronics to run it. MSD makes a box. You will have some of the sensors like the O2 so you will need to address that as well. The motor mounts are different . They make adapter plates for that. You will probably end up spending another 2K to get it running.

Re: Help me decide y'all...
Well see, he "said" that he was getting 20mpg with the motor as it is right now, carbed and built. He had it in an 01 blazer extreme though, and I don't know how much those weight compared to a 72 c10.
At least this is the full aluminum engine though, and therefore will be taking some weight off the front of the 72. Which brings up another question... How much does a cast iron 350 with cast iron heads weigh, and how much does a full aluminum LS1 with aluminum heads weigh? Todd

I'm not saying your BIL is full of it.... but I will say 20mpg w/a built LS1 is a stretch. We have a F/I LS1 in the 02 T/A. The only mods so far are a K&N & a built 4L60e from Phoenix Trans w/2400 stall. Other than those simple mods it's factory stock & we would have to baby the throttle to see that kind of milage. Realistic is 16~17mpg combined city/hwy. I've seen 21/22 on extended open highway only. Granted, the T/A is 'big-boned' but an Extreme Blazer is not a flyweight in comparison. Unless that carb is more than ultra-tuned, there's slim chance it runs as lean as the stock FI/s fuel curve around town (especially considering it's a built motor). If you can get the motor, go for it. But don't get it thinking you'll be pulling down 15mpg's in your truck.

Re: Help me decide y'all...
Oh, and if I don't feel like trying to fix the 700r4, will the th350 bolt up to the ls1?

Re: Help me decide y'all...
i would think it would but you won't be getting the full performance of the ls1.
No overdrive!

Re: Help me decide y'all...
Yeah, overdrive would be nice, but leaving the th350 in means that I wouldn't have to mess with the driveshaft length. Not to mention fixing whatever may be wrong with the 700r4

Re: Help me decide y'all...
The more I think about it, the more I think I'll get more bang for my buck if I just pull the old 350 out and rebuild it / "build it" up to what I want it to be.

Re: Help me decide y'all...
What is wrong with the 700r4? In the long run the performance may be worth repairing and making the adjustments to the drive shaft. It may cost more but might be worth it .
