Help converting to power steering

I have 70 CMC 1/2 ton and am wondering what year of GMC/ Chevy i can use for a power steering conversion. My truck had a six but has been converted to a 350 ( not sure what year ) but it does have the threaded holes to support the bracket. Also what do I need ( pump, lines, gearbox and bracket ) anything else. Any info would be great.

Re: Help converting to power steering

You are going to need a different crank/waterpump pulley setup also.

Re: Help converting to power steering

You can get a power steering setup off pretty much any 73-87 truck. Just get the gear box and pitman arm. You can get the power steering pressure line and the return line also, but I'd recommend getting those new. Get the pump and brackets obviously

It also would be a good time to collapse the steering column if you need a little more gut room like me.

Re: Help converting to power steering

Also if you get a 80's gearbox, get the pump to match and make sure the gearbox and pitman arm are off a 3/4 or 1 ton (1/2 ton won't work)

Re: Help converting to power steering

I used a gearbox from our trucks. (junk yard, took old hoses too)
80's model pump from another truck I had. (it was thrown together with who knows what by the PO)
New high-pressure hose from AZ for a 71. Got a brass fitting for the 71 hose to go on the 80's pump. (I think... that's what it looks like. It's been a long time sense I did this conversion.

Water pump pulley is from an 85 El Camino I had. (probably get it from anything)

Made some high dollar custom bracket for the pump because I don't have factory manifolds.

Oh, cut the driver fender well so the hoses can come out of the gearbox. Non power steering inner fenders are different then power equipped trucks. Or you could find one for power.

Thumbs up Re: Help converting to power steering

You didn't say if you were trying for the cheapest route or the easiest route. I went the 'easy' route and called CPP and got the whole setup from them. It works perfectly and couldn't have been easier. My two cents...
