redrilling axles

has anyone ever redrilled there axles to make them 5 lug? it looks easy.

What year truck do you have. Why not just swap axles or swap the rear end completely to get the 5 lug. I'm not convinced that welding the old holes and drilling new ones is the way to go. Just my opinion. I would think that would make it weaker. But i'm not a metal working guy so what do I know?

going to a machine shop or buying a new housing takes money. i dont see the need to pay a machine shop to do what i can do for free. i work with metal everyday and i used to work in a machine shop. i was just wondering if anyone else had done this theirself.

are you planning on doing this with a Black & Decker drill or do you have access to a knee mill?

Mine was done when I got it, but unfortunately the shop or whoever redrilled em didn't get em correct

Instead of 5x5 it's like 5x4-5/8 So I can get any other wheels than universal 5 lugs... Grrrr

Also my studs are a little bit loose IMO

So I think as long as it's done "right" then it should be fine, but might be easier to change axels

i had mine done by moss brothers in southern cal , they arent there anymore. Just so you know unless you have the pilot hub on the axle machined you will need to use a spacer becaust the 5 lug rim center is smaller. it cost me around 175.00 for both axles if i remeber right. i got tired of them and bought cpp axles and have a better feelling about it now. just my two pesos

I have never drilled any truck axles from 6 to 5 bolt pattern but I have on a few different occasions drilled ford to chevy bolt pattern axles myself.

Do it right or you will be just wasting your time IMO buy the right bits and make sure of this as you will have to check with the stud manufaturer on what size is needed for there knurl to fit properly. BTW large bits in odd sizes are not cheap either.

If done properly it's NO different than paying someone else to do it. I.E. the right layout, ofcoarse straight, right size for stud knurl, ect. also as I stated I have never gone from 6 to 5 so I do not know where the pattern will fall on the axle in between the 6 hole some thing you will have to focuse on IMO.

like others have said when its done right its no different than a machine shop doing it, just make sure you get all your measurements correct and youll be good

redrilling is not the hard part. machining the axle flange is the hard part. I paid $180.00 to have mine done and I provided the new studs and new five lug brake drum so they had something to get the measurments from. If I had it to do over I would buy new axles.
