All you guys that have lowered trucks what are you using for a spare tire and jack?

Doing that right now. Question .... what do you think about the crap in a can that you can blow in your tire to get you to a repair shop. Tire guys seem to hate it.

It's just bad because it dries and throws the tire out of balance. I think it is goopy so it's gross to work with too. I bet there are other reasons too but I don't know them.

Fix-a-flat works great!. I used it last week because some jackass decided to puncture one of my tires on my daily driver with a screwdriver
 . My dad has his spare mounted in the factory location under his bed and it don't look bad with his 4" drop in the rear. I'll try to get a pic this week sometime. I just came from his house.

Fix a flat works but doesn't get the rim too far off the road. One thing is for certain, the repair guys hate it when they go to plug the hole a screw made and they get sprayed with the stuff that didn't dry
 That was my only option at the time because the guy who sold me the S10 (yrs ago I was young) failed to mention the spare's rim didn't match the S10...Anyways, if all else fails, get a 5th nice rim and make some trick looking mount in the bed.

That spray stuff was made for women. That is real, not hype. Just get out the spare, jack, and cross wrench, and change the friggin tire already. Just do it. It's a man thing.

Some of you missed his point.I think he`s wondering "where" you put the spare.As in,is it mounted somehow,just laying loose in the bed,etc?What is your solution to having the spare not fit where it was originally mounted?I think I`ve spent more time driving trucks w/o spares than with

Thankyou special k as this is exactly what I mean. There is no jack or spare. Spare tires look ugly in a lowered vehicle. Think about it, you spend all this money getting the truck to look kool and you put a spare tire where it can be seen.
What does everyone do .... I get this feeling allot of us do not have spare tires. Any pictures of spare tires if you have one mounted on your truck and it's lowered. esll.

Out of all of my cars and trucks I have owned the only ones that had a matching set of spare tire and jack was the 2 new PT's that I had bought. One car I had did have both but when I went to use the lug wrench it didn't fit the lugs. Go figure. Had to go to the park that was a block away and borrow one from a truck. I have the puncture kit now and a cell phone in the truck. Watch me get bad ju-ju from this post and get a flat now.

I've thought about getting one of those truck mini tires for my truck, but since I've got lot's of room in my 'trunk', why bother. Also, chances are that if I needed it, I'd be a million miles in the middle of nowhere and I don't want to roll at 45mph. Anyway, I'm just using a stock steely spare and a Honda jack for my lowered truck. I can't get anything else under the front end without rolling up on some blocks.

How about a plug kit,a little air compressor that plugs into the lighter and a neat little box for it all in the bed.Or a tricked out tool box?I carried all that in my camper.
I always wondered about if I could sink one into the floor on the side near the front where guys would use the in-bed mounts.Never measured or looked into how much space from frame to bed or what height there is. Another thought,if bed space for hauling isn`t a concern is sinking one from the top like a car spare.Maybe even flush it because you`d gain a few inches w/o all the hardware and cross pieces.

Good question. Ran without a spare for years, only recently putting one of the original wheels, with an 8.25-15 tire on it, in the bed. Heck, it still has air in it. Weatherchecked, sure. Would it do in a pinch? Don't know. But it is laying in the bed of the truck....for all it is worth. Oh, and no jack. Good thing I don't stray far from home, huh? I guess I just try to keep good rubber on the wheels and trust that they are not going to fail. Is that faith, or what?
When I had my '65, I kept the spare under the bed in the original location and the jack, too. But I haven't owned that truck in almost 30 years.

i,ve got my spare in the garage and a cell phone just in case. On long trips the spare just lays loose in the bed (I'm buying a soft tannau cover (spelling?) that will hide the ugly tire.)

There really isn't too much in the way for good answers.
If you have relocated the fuel tank, a compact spare out of an astro van will fit back there and be unseen till needed. You could mount one under the bed, but if you live in a rusty area, and it is a real driver, it all goes to hell after a few years. (had a rim rust so bad it leaked...but the tire was still good) Tossing it in the bed is what I do when i cary one. Fix a flat, a plug kit, and a small compressor all go in my tool box, but can go in a small bag in the passenger cab corner area even if the tank is still there, and a small bottle jack is hard to beat. If your truck is too low to use the bottle properly, you can find something on the side of the road 99% of the time to pull up onto... at least, I always did. |
