cheap trucks

Where is everyone finding such deals? I look on craigslist, ebay, collectorcartrader, and of course this site. Where else should I be looking?

I found my "cheap" C10 on craigslist and my "cheap" burb in what we call the little nickel paper...Its one of those free small want ad papers. It was buried in the middle of an ad with some later model automotive stuff and house stuff. Just keep looking and be ready with the cash when you think you've spotted a deal.

Well for that matter what do you consider cheap?

I'm not sure about your area but there's alot around here from cheap but to rusty to work with to very expensive and still rusty. Pretty much all rusy around here other than the few exceptions of one very well taken care of, already gone over at one time, different reasons.

Cheap is a relative term, as far as I am concerned.

If you are thinking it is cheap because it runs but needs some body work (which you don't do), then it ain't gonna be cheap. If the body is good and the mechanicals are lacking, and you can handle it, then it might be cheap.

I prefer the phrase, "it's a good deal", because either it is, or it ain't. What makes a deal a good deal or a bad deal may not have anything to do with the price.

If you don't have mechanical or bodyworking skills, then it ain't gonna be cheap, despite how good a deal it may be.

Like I said, it's all relative.

Mine found me on Craigslist when I was over there.
I got tired of looking so I put in an ad myself searching for what I want. I didn´t think anyone would call but 2 people called back. I bought the 68 from the second caller. It was just what I wanted too.

Sure it's relative. Before I started looking through this forum I thought that a decent body, non running shortbed for 3000 was a pretty good deal. I am now noticing that many times when someone starts a post to see if a truck they are looking at is a good deal there are several replies that it is worth almost nothing. There are often examples of trucks that are in better condition for a few hundred bucks. So with this in mind I have determined that I am looking in the wrong place for a project truck and I was hoping that I could be guided to the right places to look. I would like a shortbed fleet side with little rust running or not running ideally for under 2000.

I would add if you're not in the position to do your own work, spend the money on something a little closer to being finished. There is nothing more frustrating than sinking money into something constantly. I looked at a '70 stepside today that ran well, with a 700r4 and "new" brakes, but the body was beat and the dash didn't work at all- he will take $2000 for it, and for someone that has the time and the knowledge, it's probably "a good deal". But I'll spend a little more for something that doesn't need something that I can't do. My .02.

I found my stepside in a free paper also. I was not even looking or in the market at all for a new truck, just something to read on my lunch break. The ad read 71 Stepside $1000 good hot rod project, and I thought I would just check it out for something to do, and here I am! And yes just cruising the neighborhoods around town with middle to lower incomes can pay off too! I've done that a couple of times.

I agree with the other post about knowing your own skills too, and look for a project that fits your style. I can wrench all day long but I hate body work, it's just not my bag. My truck was a rigged up piece of junk to alot but since it had no rust, I knew I would at least be in "my realm" (my cut rear fenders not withstanding ). So know your strong points, and also know your weak points and take that into account in your search, and that will help you get a project that you will enjoy restoring!

I paid $1,400 for mine 10 years ago, and it looked worse than what some fella's are paying less than that for today. BUT this was a southern truck in NY, it's all relative. There's a lot of deals in Texas and out west, I can't remember exactly where I saw it, but I think there was a posting at one time that said something like 40 or 50 percent of all of these trucks were sold in texas and california alone.

They are out there, but usually not listed “For Sale” you need to look around and do some door knocking. All of my trucks I have purchase whole for less than $400. Yes one did need a new frame and another a core support. But if your willing to do the work and have the tools and time.

Just look down side roads in the country, city prices are way to steep IMO. Millions of these truck were made and they still are around in good condition.

Keep your eyes looking where you might not other wise look and take your time.

All four of my trucks have come from driving around locally and/or stumbling upon them.

The best deal was the '68 4x4 with 71 parts truck I practically stole from my brother in law because he needed the cash in a hurry.

Keep looking, there are good deals out there if you're patient.

the place you live I think has a lot to do with it and also LUCK !
my 67 camaro is worth mid $20's and I paid $300 tow bill to have it delivered to me and that's all I had in it at the time I hit a lucky minute , but now the 67 short C10 that kept bouncing around inside my head was harder to find because of where I live ,
here where I live a 67 68 short C10 with little to no rust and only one or two owner's DOESEN'T EXIST ! IT AIN'T HERE ! , well one is here now (IT'S OUT HERE IN MY SHED) LOL but anyway I have my truck and I like it !!
on here in the last few week's ago someone bought a short 67 C10 that was in pretty good shape I would say as good as mine was minus the tailgate and they paid $5000 for it and NOBODY put him down for it , if you find a good truck it is most likely gonna cost a couple of buck's ,,

There's actually quite a few in Portland, Or Craiglist for these trucks. There is one in Salem, OR (I believe a 67) for $800.00. There isn't a picture, but says it is in decent shape. The average price I have been seeing them is in the 1500 - 7000 range.

I don't know how the towing companies your area work but here in Seattle, any vehicles that are not claimed go to auction...that's where mine came from. Check with both your local tow yard and the wrecking yards. Many times real gems have been sold off to the wrecking yards and can be had cheap... but you have to catch them before they lose too many parts! As mentioned before...have cash ready.

I found my 68' with little to no rust in Craigslist for $960.00 delivered to my shop. I had been looking for almost a year for the right low cost deal.

I got my 68 Shortbed off of craigs list. The cab isn't in great shap, nor is the front fenders. I paid $1700 for it. The frame and bed are in good shape

I'm getting a 72 3/4T LWB this weekend (agreed on price and looked at it last weekend) for $400, found it on craigslist. The cab is in a lot better shape, so it will be going on th e SWB frame.

My 72 GMC I bought 10 years ago out of the paper, paid $4k for it then.
