what should it cost to have a shop change gears in my back axle?

I was quoted 630 bucks with ring and pinion, bearings, seals, and labor.

seems way high to me.

200.00 For Labor Alone Is Standard. Alot Charge More. It Takes Alot Of Special Tools That Cost Alot Of Money To Do It Right.......

...Although it can be done at home with the right tools for under $150( The parts may cost more than that though).I say buy the tools and parts and do it your self.The parts should be what cost the most,not the labor charge.Special tools,it doesnt take alot of "Special tools" to set up a rear axle properly.

i thnking 400 at the most.....bummer.

I havn't really shopped it out much, but it's a must have.

If you are considering doing it yourself, I would order that dvd and watch it before you start buying all of the tools. I did it myself, and I am glad I did, but I am the kind of person who would rather spend money on tools than labor (I am also hard-headed enough to throw way too much time at the problem).

I'm lazy and don't have money or time to ruin stuff and have to fix more than what I started out with.

gotta' be careful when it's the only thing ya' got running.
