'allo - N00b here with a '69 lwb

So I finally made it. Thanks to Liz for activating my account. I have been sitting in the queue for about 5 days now *itching* to post!

At any rate - the story:

Picked up the attached '69 lwb, 327 with a 3spd on the floor conversion for $400. Engine is sound, leaks a bit of oil of course and the transmission case has a drip to it as well. This weekend I'm bringing it up to my crazy uncle's house where he has a lift and giving it a once over.

So I'm happy to be here and have been learning a LOT by just reading here everyday. Ya'lls rides are incredible.

My first question - what manuals do you recommend. I've got a Haynes for that year and a How To Rebuild A Smallblock Chevy on order. I wasn't able to find a Chilton for this year so I was wondering what other sources, besides this great board, you guys use.

Re: 'allo - N00b here with a '69 lwb

Anyone know what the reasoning would be to take the shift off the steering column and put it on the floor? I've got the manual for the kit they used and it looks on the back it has a web address, so I know kit/transformation isn't that old.

Re: 'allo - N00b here with a '69 lwb

first off let me say, welcome from a fellow Wisconsinite!

second...how the hell did you score a truck like THAT in our state...for 400?? wow. i'm impressed...haha.

and about the floor shift. sometimes the shift linkage in the column would wear out, as most mechanical things do. so instead of fixing the linkage, they'd put in a floor shift.

plus it's "cool" to have a floor shifter, or something? maybe?

Oh, and about the manuals...don't really have any. maybe a basic Chilton's or Motor manual, but other then that, you're probably at one of the best resources around.

welcome from Tennessee. Sounds like your crazy uncle might be a good resource for info. (every family needs a crazy uncle!)
As for the on-the-floor shifter, You would be surprised how many people can't drive a three on the tree.

Re: 'allo - N00b here with a '69 lwb

Welcome from So.Cal. You should order a copy of the original 1969 " Truck Data Book" from GM. Here's a link to everything you need to get this fascinating and useful info; http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a.../t-124574.html
You can use Haynes for most stuff but I went on E-bay and got an original service manual by GM. If you're patient you can get one for $10-20 dollars.
Then,if you are really bucks up,you can splurge on the "Chevrolet and GMC Light Truck Owners Bible" GM part #12363286. I bought mine on sale at a discount place for $25,but it's the most interesting truck book I've ever come across.378 pages on just about everything you could possibly want to know.
You got one heck of a deal there buddy, almost as good as mine.

Re: 'allo - N00b here with a '69 lwb

You can look for
Factory Service manual
Chassis Overhaul Manual
Factory Assembly Manual

Some of these are swap meet/Evilbay items and others can be found new.One good source for manuals is the classifieds section of this BB but you do have to subscribe($25.00)There's a link at the top of the page. The other sources I use are B&N Bookstores and www.motorbooks.com

There are also tons of books on Chevy engines and many are good. There are also books on restoring old cars/trucks,some good some not so good.magazine subscriptions to Custom Classic Trucks,Classic Trucks and Truck Builder will help you learn about kits for mods if that is the way you want to go(most things they show have been done by members here.As mentioned the FAQ's section has lots of info and most of the write ups are more complete than you will find in any mag.

I agree on the factory service manuals, they're a must-have.

I was just up your way last weekend. Went to the Iola old car show, always a blast, go every year. Even had a few Point beers while I was there.

And I must say, that's a good looking truck for that part of the country, I think you did pretty good.

Re: 'allo - N00b here with a '69 lwb

the iola car show is fantastic! I'm actually surprised you didn't see this truck on the side of the road coming into it. The guy had put it out for sale last fall and then a couple weeks later it was gone. Then for the show it came out again and I couldn't believe he only wanted 4 bills for it. I snatched that puppy up so fast.

Of course, it's probably haunted or evil or something...

If I would have seen it, you probably wouldn't own it

We usually come up to Stevens Point, then over to Iola, but took a different route this year. You're lucky I didn't see it!! LOL

AND beermunk...
One thing you will find is info for these trucks that you will not find in books or manuals. You will get great feedback from the guys who have and are working on these trucks. From my experience 99.9999999% of the people on this board are what I call neighborly folks. Always willing to offer a helping!

Welcome from the great Northwest. I can tell you that, without a doubt, the $25 you pay for membership is the better than the money spent for the best manual out there. These folks have saved my rump more than once. No matter what my question -- and I have asked all the stupid ones twice --I get an immediate answer, offers for help, offers for missing parts, etc. There's no better help than from the people who hang out here.

Having said that, we all hate you for scoring that truck for $400.

I believe I'll have to throw $25 at the site - if nothing else to get back on Liz's good side. Seriously though, a smart guy would start indexing everything he reads here.

When my rotaror cuff was acting up (in the sholder) I couldn't shift 1-2 in my old '63. Plus, a floor shifter would seem easier to make a fast shift, and of course it's more "cool".

UPDATE

So my crazy uncle found that it's not a 327 but a 307. I must've heard the guy that sold me the truck wrong. Anyway - does anyone have any pros/cons to this motor? Anything to look for - anything notorious on these?

Thank you in advance for the advice!
