Exactly how much does my truck weigh?
I've always wondered but now I'm actually going to buy this
http://www.rpmoutlet.com/autdpic.htm and will have to have a pretty good idea for it to work right. It's a '68 short bed step side w/wood bed. |

Re: Exactly how much does my truck weigh?
Without a driver, depending on amount of fuel... between 3,700 and 4,000 lbs. should be a good estimate?

Re: Exactly how much does my truck weigh?
take it to the scrap yard and run it over the scales... subtract your bodyweight and there you go

Re: Exactly how much does my truck weigh?
Well after all the responses and reading this article http://www.wkinsler.com/truck/index.htm I'm going to assume that since my truck is a shortbed with wood that I'm at least a few hundred pounds lighter. So with me in it without weighing it that I'm around 3800lbs with me in it. I will weigh it at some point however.

Re: Exactly how much does my truck weigh?
don't assume anything. I had a short/fleet with lots of lighter that stock parts like headers, rims, intake, smog and A/C junk all removed, all kinds of parts missing... and it still crossed the scales at a hair over 4000 pounds. (350/th350)
Don't assume anything. |

The rims are steel however. I guess I'll hit the scales because I've heard anything from 3800lbs to 4400lbs. That's a big gap. |

Re: Exactly how much does my truck weigh?
My 70 GMC short stepside w/o me in it weighs 4400# on our truck scales at work. It's got a 350/350 combo and had a plywood bed floor when I weighed it.

Re: Exactly how much does my truck weigh?
I weighed my truck with me in at at the dump years ago and it was just over 3,900 lbs.
I now have A/C, a 350 (had an inline 6) and a 700R4. I wouldn't be surprised if my truck tipped the scales now at well over 4K.

Re: Exactly how much does my truck weigh?
I'm really surprised by this thread and what some of these trucks weigh.
Where is all the weight hiding? Is it the frame/suspension that does it? That is the only thing I can think of.

Re: Exactly how much does my truck weigh?
in reality, the books show 3700 or so, but that is a dry weight. Add 22 gallons of gas, a couple gallons of coolant, a little junk under the seat, the fact that almost all of us run tires twice as wide... we also have twice ans many mufflers and exhaust pipes, many of us have a fire ext, some kind of a club or dsomething to beat people over the head with if need be... a 4 way lug wrench and a bottle jack instead of the little mechanical thing.... all the little things add up, and even I am guilty of forgetting that whehn I blurb out the comments like i have done above.
None the less... the number that you need, is the weight that it is when you are cruising around in a normal typical every day load. |

Re: Exactly how much does my truck weigh?
Good points......
I have wider tires, wider rims, twice the exhaust, front and rear sway bars, a few tools under the seat, and yes a fire extingisher, bigger radiator, vacuum boster, trans cooler and prolly a bunch of other crap I don't remember. There is a scale down the road from me so I'll make a run over there in a coupla days and re-post. |

Re: Exactly how much does my truck weigh?
the GM books also only gove weights for stripped down trucks... no sway bars, brake boosters, power steering, a/c.... you get the picture.

Re: Exactly how much does my truck weigh?
I have a 67 swb stepside with a woodbed and the cab gutted. No wiper motor, sbc w/ AFR heads, full tank and pretty light wheels. Also the engine bay is stripped down with manual brakes (front disc) and aluminum radiator. A light fuel cell is in the bed along with the battery and no sway bars. This truck is built for drag racing...It weighs 3500lbs w/o driver.
When I start to get real serious I may switch to a fiberglass tilt front end which of course would drop it even more. There is still a 100lbs or so I think I can drop right now though. Last edited by 67Style; 07-24-2007 at 04:52 PM. |
