The wire is a cream colored wire that plugs into the fuse block. It runs along the dr door channle under the silver sill plate. It then runs along the top of the tank to the sending unit. Check this wire first as it is easily damaged by the sill. If it checks out check the fuel sending unit in the tank. As they are natorious for going bad. If it checks out with an ohm meter then it might be the gauge. Then it is a remove replace on it. Hope this helps and good luck.

Another test I've done: Once you determine if the wire to the sending unit is plugged in and is good. Then try putting it to ground to see if the gas guage moves.

If it doesnt, you may still have a both a bad guage and sending unit.

As Aaron mentioned, suspect sending unit first. I've replaced 2 or 3 in my trucks in the last 15 years. The problem occurs when you don't drive them a lot and water in the gas corrodes the unit.
