Skid plates. Who has them?

I would like to see fuel tank skid plates. I have an idea for fabbing one but I would like to see what others have done. My fuel tank fell from under the Blaze while wheeling yesterday. Broke 1 of the straps. I took a bath while doing a trail fix with a rachet strap. It needs a skid plate anyway.
I figure 4 brackets and a piece of metal with bolts should be all.
What if anything have you done? Any ideas that you may have?

Re: Skid plates. Who has them?

Wheeling without a gas tank skid plate is risky business at best.

Our tanks sit 7.5"s below the frame rails in stock form.

I went the fuel cell route.
Had one custom made by another board member, FuelCellguy.

Sits only 3"s below the frame now, HUGE difference.
Still holds 18 gallons too.

Built my skid plate from a 1990 factory blazer skid plate.
Turned it sideways, flipped the tabs around, built in some reinforcement using 1" square tubing and then stopped worrying about it.

Gained an amazing amount of departure angle.

Re: Skid plates. Who has them?

Wes, I should have explained better but I am looking for ideas to fab up a plate that is a bit stronger than the style like Yukon is showing. If you have anything more like what vt has shown, I will be in Bremerton in a few weeks and may be interested. But if is similar to what Yukon has, you dont need to spend time on pics for me.
FuelCellGuy lives about 20 miles down the road. I will keep that in mind for the future but I bought a new polly tank last year and have my cash being spent on the Vortec right now.
Thanks all for the pics. If anyone else has done a custom plate, I would love to see it.
Thanks again

Re: Skid plates. Who has them?

I agree. I think your diamond plate is too thin to skid over rocks. In 72 they made a 42 gal tank out of 1/4 plate. Has 4 tubes welded thru, and hangs from the bed by 1/2 bolts thru tank & bed. Mine has been on their for 35 years with no trouble. hangs a little low, and has a few gouges but no dents. Down fall is you have to drop u bolts to get back cover plate off. (tanks goes to about 2 in. of it. And hitch takes a little imagination. But nice to be able to carry 42 gal. when out in the boonies. They also had tanks to go inside back around wheel well. and one that went flat behind rear seat. But I'm not for gas tanks inside truck.

Yup That is my tank. I have a 3"body lift so I cut off the tabs (voiding the warenty) NWMP put on thier tank and made new ones lower so my tank would mount as high up into the frame I could get it. then I built the skid. It is nice having all that fuel for the weekend to feed my 454
