Best sand to use in a sandblaster - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Just picked up a used Snapon sandblaster and was wondering what the best sand to use in it would be, and where to get it. I tried buying some playsand but it wouldn't work. Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

is this a cabinet if so you dont want sand// if its a regular out in the open blaster , no the play sand usually has too much moisture in it , you need to get 00fine bagged blasting sand, places i've found it are paint and auto body supply shop, large tool rental companies, building supply companies(not lowes or home depot) masonary supply companies. if you have a harbor frieght stor near you they carry a few types of nonsand blasting media

I've used DuPont StarBlast. It works well and eliminates alot of the problems associated with using more common sand.

I use the Black Beauty coal slag media that I get at the local Napa. Works great.

Don't use John Wayne sand. It won't take crape off anything

ditto, used it for my frame $10-12 per 100 lbs bag. Their website will tell you the companies in your area that carry it.

Thanks to all, it is an outside type, basically a plastic bucket on wheels with a hose to a gun which sucks the sand out. Nothing happened with the play sand at all. I figured it was too large of a grain.

Don't let your hose lay on the ground, it will pic up condensation and clog your sand. Something to do with inside friction [heat] and outside temp. Dry sand is the key to a nonpresserized system. Also try to keep your bucket as high as you can, let gravity work for you. Just a thought, I don't do that very often, must not be a CRAFT day. J.

i have used several different kinds, the black dimond being the most agressive fastest. some i have gotten i needed to screen. it was to course and plugged my nozel frequently. i use a presureized blaster and there is no comparisome to my old siphon blaster. the presurized is atleast ten times faster
