Big Block Head scratcher - power steering resevoir hose...?

Hey - where can I get one?

The parts houses all look at me like I'm nuts.

I've tried

Napa
Autozone
O'Riley

and a couple of the online places that are popular as well.

I'm looking for the hose that goes between the power steering resevoir and the pump...can't use heater hose. Where can I get it?

Thanks!!

Re: Big Block Head scratcher - power steering resevoir hose...?

do you mean between the pump and gearbox??? there is no hose between the reservior and pump. Between the pump and gearbox there is a high pressure hose and a return hose. the return hose is just rubber p.s/trans hose clamped on each end. I crimped my own high pressure hose.

There are 3 hoses for a big block power steering pump.

I'm looking for the resevoir to pump hose.

This picture someone took (I grabbed to keep for my records) shows it really well.

I have used Gates green stripe hose. It didn't get soft and mushy like the other heater hoses, I have used it on low pressure return lines on hydraulic systems with no probs. It is supposed to be oil resistant. salesman told me all green stripe hoses are resistant.

They are pretty hard to find. If you subscribe to the site, I bet you would have much better luck finding one...

Re: Big Block Head scratcher - power steering resevoir hose...?

Just replaced the one on my '68 GMC. I just went to NAPA and got 18'' of the weatherhead 3/4'' bulk. My reseroir is mounted on the fender. I have seen them mounted either on the core support or the fender. Core support mount will be a shorter hose.

I have that same set up on my 68 too. I haven't had to replace it yet, but now that I've said something it'll leak I'm sure...

Gates makes a hose just for this type of application. It will not be listed in the application section of the book (make the counter perso come away from the computer) and should come in a 3 ft section or so. Member GregBr just came up with the same stuff for his 70 BB GMC might contact him for actual gates #.

Thanks, I dropped him an e-mail.

Doesn't seem like it should be that hard to find.. It is though...

Happy to help. Go to a Gates Dealer, I used Carquest. Ask for Gates 349990, it's a 3/4" x 10ft package. They call it "p/s return hose". Will attach a pic of the box label. Mine was just under $10. Greg

Re: Big Block Head scratcher - power steering resevoir hose...?

The 34999# above apparently is specific to CarQuest.

Gates has it available in a 10' section or a 3' section.

P/N: for 10' is 34990
P/N: for 3' is 362100

Gates doesn't sell online...And the counter guys are nearly worthless anymore if it's not in the computer.

Rock Auto has the 3' section 362100 in stock....so I ordered it. I hope it's the right thing.

Interestingly enough I called 3 of the more well known restoration truck houses....none of them carry or know how to get this hose...or the person on the phone didn't.

I hope this helps someone looking for this scoop.

Re: Big Block Head scratcher - power steering resevoir hose...?

The Gates Website had it listed as 349990. When that number was given to the CarQuest guy he ordered it and you see what arrived. Any Gates dealer should be able to get it, IF they take a minute. Didn't see the 3' piece, Hope it's correct. Greg

Re: Big Block Head scratcher - power steering resevoir hose...?

I'm glad to see other trucks with the resevoir on the rad support. This is my third big block truck and the first with it on the rad support I thought it was not right but it looked factory.

HAHA Greg you rock, I wouldn't have found it without you.

Key words "IF they take a minute." Seems like around here they're happy to say "nah, no, can't get" without really trying.

W/O folks like you I'd still be scratching my head!!

Re: Big Block Head scratcher - power steering resevoir hose...?

One other place you can go is some of the parts houses that service 18 wheelers. As long as you know the diameter and length you need they can find it for you. It's usually in stock. Big thing is the hose must be rated to handle gas and oil. Heater hose will have problems and eventually leak. Found that one out the hard way.

Thanks to everyone who answered my question. There were alot of great answers and links provided. I went to Napa and crossed the Gates number for the 3 foot section of hose and came up with Napa number NPS 73306, which is in stock in the Dallas warehouse. Yea!!!!

Anyone know where I can find a cap for this type of reservoir? Someone put a radiator cap on ours and I can't find one that fits properly.

Try contacting the truck shop in crossville tenn. Ask for Jerry, he usually has one if not more in stock.
