Opinion

I'm having the 71 repainted. I have all the chrome off of it ready to send it over to the painter.
My ?
Should I leave the chrome off?
I have told him to weld all the holes up. I have until next Monday Night to decide, that's when I take it to him.
I don't want to reinstall all those clips and nuts. The first painting round cut into the paint and started the rust process that I was trying to avoid in the first place.
It's going to be painted VIPER RED and GUN METAL GREY.
This is it's present state less the chrome and paint is really bad now.

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Opinion

Personally, I like the trim. Maybe leave bottom only or vice versa?

Arrow Re: Opinion

I like our trucks with and without the trim. I wanted my truck to appear done in the back lane way sorta look to it. So I shaved it in and out. If my truck was going to be along the factory stock appearence I would leave the trim on.

Re: Opinion

Here are some pictures of it as of today. I still have to take the door handles, back bumper, parking and rear lights, side markers and key locks off, but I will do that when I take it Monday night. More than likely take them off Sunday afternoon.
Having the factory filler neck hole welded up also.
Thought about having chrome air brushed on, but price is a big factor.

Being it is two tone without the lower trim I think it would look better without the upper. Cleaner look.

you could always have the trim airbrushed on, that is if you have deep pockets

Re: Opinion

The grey is going to be all the way up to the seem and follow around the wheel well. The front bumper will be all grey and the tailgate will have the recess grey. I'm thinking pinstriping afterwards to high light the grey.

This is the new home I have for it when it's back from painting. It has sat outside it's whole life up until this past May when I finished the Garage. Now it's got a nice place to rest.

Re: Opinion

my 72 cheyenne has upper and lower trim and was solid white from the factory. when i re-do it, it'll be hugger orange/white and lower trim only. if your trim is good, you could sell it to offset some of the cost of filling the holes.

Re: Opinion

I actutally have two set's of moldings for a longbed. This last set was bought all new when I had the truck painted the first time. I have 2 complete sets I'll make someone a deal on. I have all kinds of old stuff these trucks that I have bought or gotten off junkers. I just gave away a complete 67 hood, hood springs that wasn't even bent. That's right gave it away.Very good friends son building a 67.

Re: Opinion

Remove the stock trim, but re-install the trim for a '67-68. It follows the wheel well contours. Since you have a long wheel base, my opinion is it will look very nice.

Be sure the shop rolls the windows up before they weld the upper holes. Welding slag doesn't mix well with glass. Makes a mess of the window.

Re: Opinion

ChevLoRay,
Thanks for the tip. The glass is going to be replaced soon after the paint job is done. I still will put them up before welding or take them out one.

Re: Opinion

Took the 71 over to the painter today and he has it for the next 4 weeks or more for the paint job. Viper red and gun metal grey. Filling in all the holes and no mouldings. I will be posting pictures as it's done.

No trim at all. The tailgate is even being shaved off to the trim around the back of the cab will be gone to. Now I'm excited about getting it back.

Re: Opinion

my plan was to fill in the holes and stripe in the trim with fineline , and paint it on. then all you would need to airbrush is some shading, which wouldnt be expensive. now i think they have peel and stick ,sticky back clips so i think im not going to go through the trouble of welding all the holes and just use the stick on clips with the original chrome. if i can get it off without destroying it that is.

Re: Opinion

Went by to see the progress of the truck. He had all the holes welded up and body filler done on most of them. Has to start sanding now. Said it was to hot and he almost fell out today while working on it.

He welded the holes up then body filler. The filler is so he can build the area up to sand it down to match the rest of the truck.
