Harmonic balancer bolt removal - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I went to the FAQ section and typed in Harmonic as the search word and nothing came up. Any way here is my situation. I pulled the motor out of my truck and put the new on in. The new one is all bolted up and the old one is on a stand. I don't know how to remove the harmonic balancer bolt to get my pulleys off the old one. Can anyone offer any suggestions. I don't have acces to air at this time. Also there is no flywheel on the old one.

if your talking about the center one that goes into the crank. without air or a flexplate/flywheel to hold onto. put a ratchet on it and smack it sharply with a hammer or something hard. the sudden jerk(like an impact gun would cause) can sometimes break it lose. or you can try to put some cord into a spark plug hole and have the engine turn around untill its locked and then loosen the bolt

Seeing you have the engine mounted on a stand, try threading two bolts in the crankshaft flange where the flexplate would bolt on and stick a prybar through where the stand head mounts to the engine block and engages with the bolts to keep it from turning. Good luck....

IIRC you don’t need to remove the harmonic balance to get the pulleys off. If this is a new motor you might as well put a new HB on it.

So then it is a normal thread and not a left handed thread right??? And does the bolt need to be replaced once removed or can I use it again?

It's normal right handed threaded bolt and can be used again. The harmonic balancer bolt is a belt and suspenders type deal. The tight fit of the balancer on the crank should hold it on (I think early sbc's didn't even have a bolt), but the bolt is added insurance.

The "are you serious" question reminds me of the time someone asked a question about how to remove the shifter er, peg on a Harley. I replied lefty loosey, righty tighty. The guy came back all huffy but a few others replied that the answer was brief, but accurate. Funny...

Usually V8 engines don't have strange stuff like left hand threads because 8 cylinders makes things pretty smooth so there's no need. V-twins have them hiding in strange places and you start to wonder after the 6 foot "extension" doesn't help...
