What transfer case in '79?

My newest addition that I got for free is a 79 short k10.It has a 4spd,I remember that much.Would it have a 205 behind it in that year? I could go out to the barn it is stored in and look but asking here is so much easier
If it is a 205 will the front driveshaft from it work in my 72 K5? I'm converting the blazer to a 4spd if this has a 205 but dont have a front d-shaft for it so if it'll work I will use it too.

i THINK those have the NP208, but im not positive. a buddy of mine has a 85 K10 SM465/NP208

Dustin a good friend of mine who has been doing 4x4s a while told me that most 4 spds were 205s but in the 80s they changed to 208s so you'll have to crawl up under there and id it visually keep me in mind if you find or end up with a extra 465/205 my friend will be heading up to indy next month for the jamboree, Mike p.s. i have a extra front shaft if that one won't work

My 79 3/4 ton, sm 465 has a 205 in it, but it does not have the holes in the side for the torque bracket. The machined surface for them is there, but it was never drilled and tapped. It is also the original 205 that came with the truck. Not sure on drive line length in relation to the 72, but I will guess that it wont work without mods.

Thanks guys.I did some research and from what I read in the 1/2 and 3/4 tons 79 was the last year for the 205 with the sm465 manual.The truck may be a late 79 model year and have a 203 or 208.I'll check it out some time.I'm hoping it's a 205....
Mike,I've got a 465/Rockwell,dont know if I'll sell it or not though,at the moment..I've also got a th350/205 extra too

Some of the 205 front drive shafts have a flat flange that they bolt to. And the older ones are mounted to a yoke. I dont know what year the change was though. Watch out for that.
I am looking for one of these flange type transfer cases. They have like 30 splines and are stronger than the older style 10 spline cases. And it is easier to take the driveshaft off too.

I am pretty sure that all GM 205s have a 10 spline front output shaft. Some use a yoke (older with the Spicer double cardan) and some use a flange (newer with the Saginaw double cardan). 30 spline front output shafts were used on Ford 205s, and the output shaft will swap into a Chevy case.

I was thinking about this some, and it was bugging me. Went out to the barn and took apart a spare NP205 I have out of a 1980 K20 that was originally behind a 10 spline SM465. It has the flange front output...and its 30 spline. This must be a late(r) model thing.

What you may be thinking of is the 32 spline front output...that's the one Fords, Dodges, and any divorced 205 has.

I am dumb when it comes to OE equipment in the fugly years of 4wds (73-87)

only one year did chevy use a 203 behind a 4sp think it was 73-74

1980 was the last year of the 205 behind the 465 in 1/2 tons.

Just got back from looking at the truck in the barn it resides in.Yes,it has the np205 so hopefully it will be going in the blazer as soon as I get a new clutch setup for it.Now,the stock blazer driveshaft is going in my short k10 so keeping the driveshaft from the '79 matched to the same transfer case it came from,it should work,correct?

There isnt much good stuff left from it since it was in a fender bender with a FORD (atleast the chevy wasnt totalled and sent to the junkyard) but it does have a running 250,front and rear driveshafts,power steering,and 3:73 axles...

i think the blazer driveshaft is shorter than what is needed in the swb.

I forgot to look as it was getting dark fast and still had to go hook up the trailer before dark so I didnt stay long.On my '79 lwb 4wd with the auto tranny and NP203,it has metal rods going up towards the motor using the same bolt holes as you would use mounting to the torque bracket.Since it is a 4spd it may not have any or it may have the metal rods,don't know at this point.It won't be that hard to drill & tap holes in the side for the torque mount but it's really only needed for the auto trannys anyway..
Jamie,on the front the driveshaft wouldnt differ between blazer and truck,would it? I wouldnt think so..

Input Spline: GM Used four different input shaft configurations on these cases.

10 spline: (1971-85) The most common were units supplied with a 4 speed which typically had a 10 spline male input shaft.



27 spline: (1971-79) The units supplied with a T350 automatic have a 27 spline male input shaft.



32 spline (Short); 32 spl (Long): The units supplied with a T400 Automatic (also SM465 86-up) have a 32 spline female input. We have seen both a short (about 1.5 to 2.0" stickout) and long (more like 3-3.5" stickout) versions of this gear. This gear is directly compatible with the Klune-V Extreme Underdrive, which can be supplied with a 32 spline output shaft. Longer spacers are required with the long input.

1979 to 1985 GM NP205: 8 bolt "racetrack" bolt pattern:

During these years, the GM NP205 showed up behind Turbo 400 and SM465 Transmissions in 1 Ton trucks only.. 1/2 and 3/4 T trucks began to be supplied with the NP208 instead. SM465 units will still typically use the 10 spline input. Turbo 400 units have the stout 32 spline female input (in most cases the short 32 spl input, about 1.5-2.0" stickout) however still uses the 8 bolt "racetrack" bolt pattern.

1986 and Later GM NP205: 6 Bolt circular bolt pattern:
At this point GM updated the unit to use the same 6 bolt circular bolt pattern used on the NP208, and all subsequent GM full size 4x4 truck applications. All of them are the 32 spline female input, although those we have seen are the long (about 3.5" stickout) 32 spl input.

Front Output
GM used two front output shaft configurations, one had a spline count of 10, the other was a 30 spline. 10 splines came before 1977 (roughly) 30 spline shafts came after 1977 (again, roughly). One quick way to tell them apart is by the fact that 10 splines came with a 1310 series yoke output, capable of accepting a CV or yoke driveshaft. 30 spline shafts came with the flat flange on the output, capable of accepting the GM 3R series CV joint.

The 10 spline output will accept the stock 1310; Or a separately purchased 1330 or 1350 Spicer u-joint yoke, and the 1310 CV yoke. The 30 spline flange will accept the 1330 or 1350 CV joints.

Rear Output
The most popular version Is a 32 spline shaft / fixed yoke and will accept a 1310, 1330, or 1350 u-joint yoke, and the 1310 CV yoke.

Some were slip yoke, with a longer tailhousing. Parts are available from us to convert these to fixed yoke, if desired.
