Rear bumper suggestions(help)...

I have a 79 blazer that is gettin close for paint(bright yellow), and it has a rear roll pan. I dont really like the look of the pan. I just has a short stubby look and I need to put a receiver on it to pull my boat. Also the fuel tank shows way too much. Anybody have tricks for the stock bumpers (pulling them in closer), I know that this subject has been touched on before, but kinda wanted to hear from some of the blazer/burb guys. Boatpuller could you chime in if you have any suggestions/pics, I cant seem to find your past info on the subject..........thanks jesse

i think basically what you do is drill new holes in the frame for the bumper brackets farther in on the frame.

Yeah I'd do a folding license plate, with the hitch behind it.

Yes that is what I want, but I am going to be running out of room soon with the fuel tank and trying to move the bumper in close to the body. I really dont want to have to build a custom fuel cell but its starting to look that way. the previous owner installed the pan and I know that there was some frame trimming done. I just dont know how much ....

I forgot about the gas tank, i think maybe if you have some welding and fabricating skills you could come up with something similar and make it work..

A lot of the frame was removed to get the rollpan on there. The frame horns extend past the body on the rear probably about 4".

can you get a pic of the rear frame so we can see what yuo have to work with. might have to mode some new rear bumper brackets that are just longer to work with the moded frame.

I think the stock bumper looks pretty good on a blazer, but pulling it in a little closer to the body would be an improvement.

Bagged, do you see much of you gas tank with the bumper and do you think there is any room for a hidden hitch. I would like to cut behind the license plate for access to the hitch. Like most hidden hitches.....thanks jesse

I think you could fit a hitch, but it will probably have to be custom built. Or at the very least modified.
You do see the tank even with the bumper, but not nearly as much as with a roll pan.

Moving the bumper in may cause it to look more stumpy from the side than it already is. I know someone that did it and didn't really like the outcome.

Capt......do you have any pics of the rig that had the bumper moved in?? After looking at your pic of the stock stuff I dont think that I have much frame left to work with. I know that the frame "horns/ears" are long gone and that will affect the bolts on the bumper. I really wanted to have the bumper bolts shaved and a bumper rechromed, but i think i better get a set of used stuff and see how it all ties together...........jesse

I can look around, but I am not sure if I do.
If you are going to move it, you might can use some factory rear brackets for a truck in place of what you have, or you can fab something up to mount them.

I've researched sucking in the stock bumper on my '85 Silverado and it is no small task to make it look just right.

For the look I want, I would have to section the bumper in several places, build new mounts, and then re-chrome it.

One thing I've never seen anyone do is shave the bumper. I was planning on doing this for a while but eventually gave up on the idea thanks to the realities of the all mighty dollar...

So like make a much wide up and down rear bumper and getting rid of the bolts Sorta like a body kit for imports but made of steel and alot more work but in the end no one else has one.

Yeah, I was a little confused by that too...

I think what he is saying is that you would turn the bumper into almost another roll pan type piece, but it would be seperate fromt he body and continue the line of the tail gate, almost as if you just extended the sheet metal in the rear.

hava,on my truck i just went thru the process of tucking in the rear bumper.in the pic of the gmc that capt kaos posted.my center brackets are gone i just used the 2 outers.in those outers i slotted the bolt holes as far as i could where they bolt to frame,allowing me to slide it forward.if you search back a month or so i posted some pics.i don't have em on my computer anymore.maybe different then what your wanting,but it can be sucked in some.
