yes, for 70, i know you arent too thrilled about it and think its useless info, but maybe someone else can use this info, and may be looking for shafts to get 5 bolt into their 70 axle and this would be a source for shafts, i know you see this as retarded and not as helpful info at all, im sorry
also would be good for 4x4 trucks converting to 2wd when wanting to go to 5 bolt, etc i hope not all californians are so jaded when it comes to new info no matter how useless to them it may be, ------------------ Randy- Lincoln, IL r68c30@hotmail.com 2177353230 -71 C-10 350/CH465/3.07, assemble it, yeah right, that'll happen in this world,(not) -84 Z28 Camaro 5.0L 700R4, 3.73, beater, paid way too much for it like an idiot,, -84 Firebird SE 2.8L T-5, rod knocking, dammit,, -82 Firebird 350 4bolt (TBL)/TH350, not running, dammit... buy/sell/hoard/trade most any GM vehicle parts of any kind -parting out: '81 Cutlass Supreme Brougham *Paint is overrated © RSS Enterprises 2000 [This message has been edited by Fast68Chevy (edited April 26, 2002).] |

As far as the shaft size goes I've been told by alot of junk yards, I'm sorry, Auto Recylcle centers, that only 71 and 72 axles will fit in a 71-72 rear end. Not true! I've used a posi, housing and all, just pulled the axles, from a 68 truck- with 72 axles. The 67 axles are shorter and won't fit. take both axles from a 6 bolt "68-70" drum and a 5 bolt axle and there the same length and seal diam. Just a little info I've found. Junk yards around here always want more for a 71/72 posi than they do for a 68-70 one and they will work!

I thought I would throw in that the 67-68 coil spring rears are narrower then the leaf axles. Also the 67 axle is about 1/2 inch per side narrower then the 70 up coil type to.

Does this mean I can swap the rears to 2.75" wide shoes by just swapping everything from the backing plates out?

i hear that it can be done to the 64-69 housings, yeah, i stil have yet to make time to do measuring on those housings and do a swap to see if it works sine i have a 78 model 2.75 brake axle here i parted the carrier out of, want to make it work on a 70-72 housing, but may be too wide, so hmm, crappy thast the 73-up shafts are same length as the 70-72 shafts, they may not be long enough to allow use of 2.75 plates and shoesa nd drum on 70-72 housings, cant see why it owuld work if housings are acutally longer in 70-72 than 73, which i believe are, i need to measure that width at the axle tube flanges directly at where the paltes bolt on to the flanges,
i noticed that the 2.75 brake plates have alot more offset than the 2" ones, so hm ,tat may make up for it and it all may work fine on any housing, that would be wild.. never know..... 2.75" shoes upgrade would be great ------------------ Randy- Lincoln, IL randy@ccaonline.com 2177353230 -71 C-10 350/CH465/3.07, assemble it, yeah right, that'll happen in this world,(not) -84 Z28 Camaro 5.0L 700R4, 3.73, beater, paid way too much for it like an idiot,, -84 Firebird SE 2.8L T-5, rod knocking, dammit,, -82 Firebird 350 4bolt (TBL)/TH350, not running, dammit... buy/sell/hoard/trade most any GM vehicle parts of any kind -parting out: '81 Cutlass Supreme Brougham *Paint is overrated © RSS Enterprises 2000 [This message has been edited by Fast68Chevy (edited April 30, 2002).] |

Last spring or the spring before da-burb stood on dry ground and handed me wrenches while I was rolling around in the mud pulling the rear axels out of a 75 or 76 4wd Blazer for my 1971 4x4 chassis. They bolted (slid?) right in and are in use to this day.

Fast68Chevy, seems to me if the axles are the same length, then they should fit. Wouldn't be suprised if the backing plates are offset to make up for the extra width. I've got a '72 1/2t that I would love to put the big shoes on, heck of alot cheaper than discs.

Heavy half?? Whats really funny is when I was in the Air force we used long bed 1/2 ton 4x4 trucks and blazers. They were rated as 3/4 tons. Same trucks as the street versions, just a tad more in the heavy duty department such as tranny coolers and some different frame bracing here and there. But they still ran the 12 bolt axles..
