What to do when your truck is at paint

So I am one of those that can't paint or weld. So I am having my brother's father-in-law do all of the body and paint. So because I have spent so much time with my truck I am finishing a list of to do's. So far I have cleaned the garage and painted the floor. Worked on our sunroom, made some shelves in the basement, cleaned the basement, started the deck that my wife is asking for and so on and so on. The truck has only been gone for three weeks. I hope I get it back soon. I am going to need a break.

Im in the same process as you are right now. My uncle's friend is doin mine's also. So far, its been 3 month's since I left it at his shop. He's promising me he'll finish it by late November or Early December as he has other cars to get out of the way. But im cool with it. I been goin to check on it once in a while and everything's goin smooth. No rush for me, as long as its goin to be like show new again when it's finished. If not, then no $$$$ .

Re: What to do when your truck is at paint

hey guys im a painter that works for a ford dealership in the dfw area. so my question is what kind of painters are you sending your trucks to?why is it taking them so long to get it done. what i mean is are you taking it to them because they arent charging you very much or because you are buddies with them.also when you take them your truck is the bodywork (fully)completed?these are all factors.when somebody brings me their vehicle for a paint job i make sure the bodywork is (fully) completed it usually only takes me 2 weeks at the most to knock out a complete color change and i work full time at the dealership. im not trying to brag but i personally dont like cars sitting around my place that long.also ,it does take longer when you have to paint every piece to the vehicle.firewall, splash shields, core support etc.. another thing to consider is how much there is to paint on 67-72 trucks, interior, dash, firewall, inside of bed.i havent painted my truck yet but when i do im painting everything and im planning on it taking no more than 2 weeks at most to get it done.maybe this will help explain why your trucks are gone so long

Many shops won't even take this kind of job on. The ones that do, usually take it on as filler work for between jobs.
Also, I would say 90% of the guys droppin off there trucks don't have the body work done, need cab corners, rockers a couple fender cups all welded in... you know the deal.
On top of that, none of us want to spend eleventy billion dollars on them either.
Then, like you said, to do a proper paint job, color chainge or not, you have to blow the sucker apart to a bare cab on the frame just about. Cut all the panels in, then hang the doors, fenders core support, hood, toss the bed on it, then you can paint it...
In all reality, the body shops don't want this kind of job, they'd rather have there bread and butter... hood, fender, grill, shot the paint, bill the insurance.
Any part of the hot rod/restoration scene you go to, the story is the same... a year to life in paint and body jail.

Re: What to do when your truck is at paint

I was outside a couple of weeks ago and a guy drove by on one of those 4-wheel gator things, I noticed him going pretty slow and looking in the ditchs (He said he was looking for his teeth...thats a whole different story ). Anyway he pulled up the driveway...asked me if I had seen any teeth?!? then proceeded to tell me he was a retired body guy and would paint my truck right there in the driveway...for free

Re: What to do when your truck is at paint

Hopefully since it is a family type member.....you wont have to do what most people do.........

After twice the time has gone by...call..get told 1 more week.
Take them parts they lost and claimed were not on the vehicle.
After 4 times the quoted time has gone by......call and get told 1 more week.
Sneak by to see your vehicle either apart and back in the corner or outside and rusting. Call and they say they are going to put color on it tomorrow.
After a year has gone by...call.....No return phone call.
Go to take the vehicle out of the shop and get handed a bill.
Go to court
Pay mechanics lien.
Finally get the vehicle back in parts and boxes and take it to the next jack ass and start the above all over again.

Buy a gun, compressor, and a book and learn to do it yourself.

I LOVE PAINT AND BODY!!!!!

Re: What to do when your truck is at paint

We can discuss amongst ourselves what we have on our "b-list" of things to do, and we're all accepting and in agreement for the most part.

But let's make a pact here and look out after each other

NEVER let the wife know you're looking for something to do while your truck's away getting worked on, else she'll point you [overtly or covertly] to that seemingly endless list of domestic things SHE want's you to do.

Nature abhors a vacuum, so always have several projects going at once.

Agreed?

Re: What to do when your truck is at paint

Geeze : Every bit of this is right down the path. I talked with a bunch of these body shops. Got the same answer. It will be fill work. We make our money from insurance jobs.
Finally I found a fella to do the work. 6 up front one grand a month till its done , and not to exceed 15 grand. Off frame restoration. Was off the frame and at the soda blaster before I paid the retainer. Was major work on the cab. Its almost finished. Then the bed. He got this in April 07 . Should be finished by December. That sort of dedication is rare to find. He said this normally will be 6 months to five years. The work is no less than perfect. I feel so humble to have found a man such as this one to do the work since I read the previous posts in this thread. Took me about a year to find this fella.

Re: What to do when your truck is at paint

I would like to buy a burb and drop it for the wife with updated drive train etc but she is not really cooperating. Maybe I will find one for me. But I better get my shed/barn built. I am thinking 40 x 60 with a portion that is 16' tall for lifting things and the Man room.
