According to ck5 - http://coloradok5.com/specs.shtml
there were either a d44 or 10 bolt starting in 1977 & 1978 with the 10 bolt being the only option starting in 1979.

i had this conversation not to long ago a friend of mine was positive that they started using the 10 bolt in 1979 until i brought him one with 1976 stamped in the ring gear?

It sounds like "77" was the first year, if they dated late "76".

my current 77 has a 10 bolt front from the factory, and a 79 K20 that i owned a few years back had a Dana 44 in the front stock. anywhere from 77-79

I know that GM lists the steering boxes as through`75,the break point for many other changes.
