Help ....!

[EAST SIDE LOW LIFE]

When my truck (70'GMC-2WD) comes to a dead stop and I'm turning right or left and proceeding slowly it seems to feel like it chunks side ways this is intermitant as it doesn't do it all the time. Your turning from a stop perhaps braking as you try to get into traffic, never when going straight. I have a posi rear end and new brakes.

It seems to be coming from the centre of the cab near the back of the seat. What are the symptoms of a carrier bearing starting to fail?

All ideas welcome ....

ESLL my 67 use to do that ,and i changed my carrier bearing and new u joints.....>? fixed it........i dont know if this is the same as your problem... but maybe it will help??? what gear are you running? the wife says m 72 did that also i never noticed it.... i have 456 posi in it?

Gears feel like their in the 3.55 to 3.70 range tack reads 2000 rpm at 50 mph. Truck has a mid range comp. cam that likes it when your around 2000 rpm.

I found on the pass. front side a triangle orange/reddish color tag. These are supposed to tell you the gear ratio. If anyone knows what this tag represents let me know. If it is still on the rear end the gears are more then likely the original as these tags seldom get reinstalled.

Mine does that too & wondered what it was. I drove a friends 1973 (blown 468) long bed last night & noticed his did it too. He said it was the clutches in the posi doing it. Only going slow & turning. Mine seems to do it after it comes to a complete stop, then turn going slow, but not every time. No clue...

When my truck was more of a rat rod (before I spent money on it) this never occured. Now it happens .... go figure. I don't like the feel of it so it's got to go. It doesn't feel safe. I feel like another project and post is on the way. Stay tuned ....

I am not sure what your truck is so I do not know if this is applicable. My K30 did the same thing until I discovered ( the hard way I will add ) that I was driving with the front hubs locked but not in 4X4. Before I bought the K30, someone had worked on the hubs and had them installed so that when they indicated unlock they were in reality locked.

Has anyone heard of Wahl oil (pronounced whale oil.) It is a very fine lubricant some uses include hair cutting clippers sewing machines etc. I know this as my dad was a barber and used it on his clippers.

Anyway I was talking to a buddy of mine yesterday (Wayne the fella that is building the 32Ford that I posted a couple weeks back) and he mentioned this product and said to to add it to my diff. and top it up with gear oil. I couldn't beleive this and he swore by it. A while later he e/mails me GM additive part #992694 which he say's is wahl oil repackaged. I just got back from the dealer with the additive and I picked up a bottle of gear lube GM part #89021672 as well which also has the wahl oil in it (check out the handy pour spout.)

So I'm going to put this in my diff. and test it for a couple day's and I'll post the results. Wish me luck as this would be an inexpensive fix for what is an irritating problem.

My blazer was doing this after I changed the differential fluid and didn't add limited slip additive. I changed the fluid, added the limited slip additive. Problem solved. Maybe a posi needs additive??

Only in Canada you say .... pity. Shane nice to hear from you. The GM. parts guy knew what I meant and my buddy pronounced it the same way (whale oil.) It's like spelling .... color or is it colour. Anyway thanks for pointing that out. I'm really trying to fix a problem that I and others seem to have and if these products work and I hope they do call it what you like.

I remember being told there was whale oil in that additive as well as in the old type-F trans fluid. Maybe I was wrong, I sometimes am...

Hello there Corn,

Your not wrong and that is why everyone calls it by the slang term "whale oil" up here.

I was having trouble getting the fill plug out .... I mean frozen tight. Tried lube, heat you name it and my buddy Wayne came up with an idea that he uses "see picture." This will also fit a 15/16 socket and bar or 15/16 open or boxed end wrench. Also heat up and touch it with wax (candle will do) and let cool. Wax acts like a type of lube.

Well no go on the plug coming out. So new location with a new plug was my final solution like yours bad6772. It turned out good and I've decided to use a product called "Right Stuff" to put it back together again. The only negative is this product is a tad on the rich side. But if it avoids a leak I guess it's worth it.

Update: I decided to get rid of the painted bolt thing and bead blast the bolts and use quick black only long enough to take these bolts to a grey color. I get some simple contrast with out bling to go with my primer theme.

If I'm not mistaken (on the size), I've used a 1/2'" extension (turned around) and a pipe wrench to get the plug out.

Were back in buisness and with good results. These products work and it is worth while doing a change to begin with as who knows when it was done last. My diff. totally improved as soon as I went down the street. No jumping around at a stop where your required to turn right or left. It was startimg to do this allot.

I would highly recommend this before replacing other items like carrier bearings. u joints etc. You can't loose as your diff, probably needs it anyway.

Yea, who would of thought it could be this simple. A $60.00 buck cure, cheapest repair so far on this project. Thanks for your imput as it was a help as well as it gave me ideas. Have a great weekend.
