Price quote on Sandblasting your frame???

Just wondering what all you guys are paying to get your frames sandblasted???

I dropped off my frame last week and asked how much it would be and I was told $150. Got a call to come pick it up and they say it's $350??? I tired to explain to them I was quoted $150 and had asked for a phone call to confirm it...The guy starts cussing at me on the phone that I am "F" ing" pissing him off and says "Pick up your frame at 5pm"...and hangs up on me.

I did nothing, but said "I was quoted $150". Now what????

sitting here feeling abused.

Re: Price quote on Sandblasting your frame???

I'm not sure what you can do at this point. I'd make sure to receive a paper copy of the next quote you get. Maybe try contacting the BBB. I wonder if it isn't a common thing among blasters, the one in my area is a dick too.

Either way, that is no way to be talking to customers. If anyone should feel stupid, it would be him. When you go to pick your frame up, try being nice with him, if that doesn't work, show him that it works both ways.

Re: Price quote on Sandblasting your frame???

Tka 150.00 cash, maybe 200.00, a couple of friends to help get the frame on trailer, or back of pickup, show up at 4:30, and be ready to argue. If he refuses to give you the frame for 150, offer him 200.00, but that's it (if you really need the frame). Unfortunately he has you in a bad spot now that he actually has the frame. Hopefully your couple of "large" freinds will help persuade him. Be polite and don't get angry or blow up immediately, it won't help you. Let him know that you recieved a quote and would appreciate him sticking to it, that way you can refer future business to him. Hope this helps some. Good luck and let us know how it works out for you!

What is it about sand blasters and junk yard guys.....Always seem to act like you're interrupting their coffee break.......or that they're "king" and you are the servant....

I'm not saying all of them.....but a lot......

Re: Price quote on Sandblasting your frame???

That guy sounds like a d*ck. Offer him cash, first. Second, offer him your credit card. If you feel that you have been taken advantage of after the transaction, call the credit card company and dispute the charges. Good luck. I had 2 different blasters try the same thing. I will always get a quote in writing from now on.

I need the frame...yes. I am in no way going to blow up at him. I was calm on the phone and never was disrespectful....It was all him. We will see what happens.

Re: Price quote on Sandblasting your frame???

Do you know who you talked to that gave you that quote? If you can say I was quoted/told by (insert name here) $150, then they should honor the price.

You may also want to go back on them stating that you needed a confirm price before you would authorize work on the frame.

Tell them that you are a dealer of GatorHyde and to offset the $200 difference, you are willing to give them a $200 credit to bedline anything they want. They might go for that, and you will only be out of the materials.

Good Luck

Any updates? Were you able to pick it up for $150?

Re: Price quote on Sandblasting your frame???

Remember - the person who loses their temper in an arguement first is the one at a tactical disadvantage.

Staying calm and focusing on the facts will keep you with the upper hand, although you are in a tough spot without a written quote.

Still, if an employee gave a price quote, then that employee represented the business to you, and the matter needs to be settled between them first.

I'd recommend that you get that guy to tell his boss in front of you what he said, then if he lies to save face, you can call him on that.

You might end up writing it off to an expensive lesson.

I know most of us can tell a good story about a similar situation - they are all just one of lifes painful lessons that need to be learned, so that the NEXT time when the stakes are higher, you do follow the procedure of getting a proper written quote.

IMHO

I just want to rule out any other possible justification for him charging more, So two more questions:

Did he ONLY do the frame and NO other parts? Was there any other work required by him before he got started (disassembly/prep that you did not do)?

Re: Price quote on Sandblasting your frame???

They quoted you $150 and are now trying to get over double that, plus being an A$$ on top of that. I'd take a couple buddies to help you load it and $150 cash. Show up and tell him here is his $150 and you are taking the frame. If he doens't like it he can call the cops. More than likely the cops will tell him to take the $150 and you take the frame and that if he feels the need he will have to take you to court. He more than likely won't bother and if he does I'm sure the judge won't award him the money if his employee quoted you the price. He should train his emplyees better. DON'T let him screw you!

Re: Price quote on Sandblasting your frame???

You were quoted a price by an employee representing that company. Any discrepancies are between him and his boss, not to be passed on to you. It is the owners responsibility to make sure jobs are being quoted correctly and if not it is his responsibility to make sure you know the actual cost prior to any work being done and then to honor the quote given. The boss and employee dropped the ball and that is not your problem and should not be passed onto you.

More than likely you will have to get the police involved as you already know you are dealing with a shady operation.

Re: Price quote on Sandblasting your frame???

Yes I told him who quoted the price...he said if the price wasn't from me it is not valid. I asked him if the man was his employee that I dropped the frame off with and whom quoted me? He said yes, but the price is wrong...Its's 350.00.....he hung up on me after he told me I was F ing pissing him off.

Re: Price quote on Sandblasting your frame???

I absolutely hate when I get a quote and end up paying 50% more. It happened to me once and I was pissed! I understand a quote is just that, an estimate. An approximate 10% difference is acceptable, but anything more without first notifying the customer is BS!

My bare frame was $65. I left it with the blaster and came back in an hour and a half and picked it up.... He did a nice job on it too.

Re: Price quote on Sandblasting your frame???

There's NO WAY I would pay 233% (or whatever it comes out to) of the price I was quoted. I would tell him to have your frame ready and in the best of condition he can make it for the price quoted, or if he insists on charging you that amount that in addition to a trailer (or how ever you were going to pick it up) that you'll come visit him with a police officer in tow (or meet you there). He may figure he has you by the balls since he has your frame and you have to pay him to get it back...but he's wrong in thinking he can get away with that type of quoting.
Tell him if he's set on getting that price to take the difference out of the employee's check. If the employee is mis-quoting then are they still employed there?

Re: Price quote on Sandblasting your frame???

68 gmc custom is right. As a business owner myself, this is a matter between the employee and the owner. The customer is NOT responsible for this misquote.

Go to him and state that youre going to hold youre ground on the quote and if theirs a problem youll get the police involved. All these guys agree that the market value for this service is 150-200 dollars or so.

Do make sure to call the BBB and file a complaint of his yelling and cursing you...

Re: Price quote on Sandblasting your frame???

Ok guys....sorry for the delay in reporting. I got to his shop at 4:45...door was locked generic note on the door telling customers to go to a different location about a mile away. So we drive over there and I ask to talk to Wayne, the owner. he comes out and I say "Hi, I'm Alex with GatorHyde". Silence...he says nothing so I say "Wayne, As a customer I have never been spoken to so rudely in my life, and then you hang up on me". So he goes into his speach about he is very direct and that when it's time to go it's time to go. Whatever! I bought a witness to the 150 dollar quote with me, because Wayne tried to tell me the quote was 150 dollars and hour. Mike (my friend) who helped me drop it off say's "Nope I was right there and your employee quoted 150.00". In the end the guy tells me my frame isn't done as his compressors that cost 15,000 dollars broke down and that my frame will be done tomorrow. So I brought the conversation back to "Why don't we meet in the middle, $250.00" He went into a song and dance about he's lossing money and doesn't want "my kinda job" (frames)...and that he will have 5 hours in it...blah blah blah....and says "the least he can give it to me is $275.00 to 300.00. You know he is going to charge $300. So it went from 150.00 quoted to $300.00, an increase of a 100% which is deplorable and aweful business practice. Guys, in my younger days I would have pulled him over the counter, beat his ass, and ended up in jail and court. I'm am past that point in my life. I will pay the ass the $300.00 and report him to the BBB, and do everything I can in the Denver community to make others aware of the way this guy conducts business.....once I get my frame back.
