how many bolts are in your tranny x-member

My truck last had an auto tranny in it but originally had a manual. I noticed the tranny crossmember only has two bolts holding it in ( in opposite corners) I also noticed that only two line up. There are two holes in each side of the frame and two holes in each side of the crossmember, but like I said, only two line up. So is this normal?

Re: how many bolts are in your tranny x-member

Mine may be too far off to be relevant, but my Blazer (72 4x4, auto) had only two, opposed bolts and both were loose. The X-member has 4 bolts (2 inline on each side) plus two inline on each side on the diagonal 'outriggers' that bolt to the top of the framerail. That put it at 8 total. I had a hole for each of the eight and replaced the missing bolts - took care of a driveline vibration I was chasing.

Mine had 8 originally. Two upper and two lower each side. I modified it though, so now it only has the lower bolts for each side.

are we talking about the same crossmember here? The one that the tranny tailshaft bolts to??

In my case it's the transfer case that mounts to it, but same location. The mount itself (with the rubber core) has 2 bolts to the crossmember and 2 to the tranny/t-case.

here's a link from somewhere online of an aftermarket equivalent. http://www.performanceonline.com/sto...roductid=17818

and here's a stock one (lower right foreground) from some random for-sale ad.

ok, mine only mounts to the lower frame rail. What do I have? Is this factory? I'm seeing crossmembers that bolt to the upper and lower rail. confused...

Re: how many bolts are in your tranny x-member

On the stock one, the 'wings' that come off and bolt to the top of the rail are removable. Could be that someone was lazy after a trans swap and only bothered with the lower section. Most every car I've had (from GM at least) only had 2 bolts per side and no diagonal brace. All of my GM trucks have had the diagonals.

Re: how many bolts are in your tranny x-member

ok, that makes sense. the thing I don't get though is why the two holes on each side of the frame do not line up with the holes in the crossmember??

Re: how many bolts are in your tranny x-member

How far from original is your truck? Motor swaps (6 to 8) tranny swaps (stick to auto or vice-versa) may account for the alignment issues. Do you have two holes on each side that DO line up with the cross-member (if you ignore the trans mount location)? The motor mounts can also be set in 2 different locations, which will push or pull the rest of the drivetrain along...

Re: how many bolts are in your tranny x-member

should have 8 total, 4 per side. 2 on top and 2 on the bottom of each frame rail.

Re: how many bolts are in your tranny x-member

To further complicate matters the length of the tailshaft on the tranny changes stuff also.Long or short 350 is 6 or 9 in. making a 3 in difference.

Re: how many bolts are in your tranny x-member

Here are some pics. To summarize only one bolt hole on each side of the crossmember lines up, so I'm trying to figure out if this is not a stock crossmember. I've tried all hole locations and no two holes will line up.
