need a starter for a 402, will anything else work?
My '70 c20 has had starter issues since I bought it. I think someone put a wrong starter in it (sounds like maybe put a wrong tooth count starter in it.). It has an auto trans with a 402 engine. The flywheel is in good shape. I cannot find a starter for this locally. The local parts guy's have one for a manual trans but not an auto. Are they the same? When I call summit racing they say they are the same, but I wanted to check with you guy's. Thanks.

same on the inside, but the rest depends on how they bolt up. Some standard transmission starters bolt to the bellhousing, and some to the block. Auto transmission starters bolt to the block. If the starter you can get bolts from the bottom, it bolts to the block. If it bolts horizontally through the nose piece, it will not work for you as this one would bolt to the bellhousing.

I found out that the '70 with a 402 and an auto take a special starter. From what I can find it is the only year and engine trans combo that take this starter. I was able to find one at autozone. Its a high torque mini starter and cost $150.

Autozone had in stock a part correct for only one year, and engine, transmission combination? Must have been alot of them made, and alot of them still on the road. I would have thought, that 37 year old part would be special order only. I am impressed.

Actually, someone must have ordered this one, and never picked it up. They told me it was an order only part, on top of that it is a high torque mini starter. Works great, and that's all I care about right now.

Re: need a starter for a 402, will anything else work?
Hope this helps.
Starters for a BB 402, I got mine at Kragen and it mached up great. The problem I had for a long while was there is a brace that goes on the starter for the 402 and it is very important to reinstall if yours is not there. It keeps the starter from jumping, moving and grinding the flywheel teeth. I bought the brace from the chevy dealer and the screws for it. My Longhorn now starts smoothly as it was suppose to. That was one headache I don't want back. I went through 4 starters and two flywheels because of my ignorence of needing that little brace. Good luck and hope you get it worked out!

Go with a high performance mini starter. I put one on my 350 and really like it. They have more power that a regular stock starter and are easy to install.

I would try rockauto.com... Found one year only fuel pump for a 72 c20 and worked great... all three local parts houses couldnt find a correct match... I ended up buying two to make sure I had a spare...
