Engine stand recommendations - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Well the time has come to tear into that free 327 that I got more than a year ago. I cant buy any parts for it but I can at least hope to learn something by getting into it. I need to buy a engine stand. Any suggestions on a place to pick up a good one?

I just picked a decent 1000 lb. stand up at Kragen for 57.00 after tax.

What ever one you decide on,,,,,make sure it has four wheels instead of three. The three wheeled ones seem to be prone to tipping when they are loaded and moved around.

I have heard that about the 3 wheels. Im thinking about going for the folding one so that when I am done I can fold it up and put it in a corner.

I will second the point sick69 stated about the three and four wheeled models.

EDIT: The folding models are fine as long as they are built sturdy I have one folding stand that I use over all four of my fixed models.

No the help has been great over there. Just saying that as I tear down the 327 I may go posting crazy with questions.

we;; before tearing the engine down it would be real nice if you marked stuff like rod and main caps so you can put them back together properly i use a nice set of number and letter stamps

100% AGREED. My brother n law taught me that when I pulled out the 350 thats in the 68 now. I had it out and did a rear main seal swap on it. DONT MIX UP THE PARTS he said

Wait a sec. Now that I think about it the rods are being replaced will all of the bearings do i still need to remember where each went?

you still need to put the pistons in the same holes if your not replacing them but if the rods are new it doesnt matter witch rod goes were.

It only matters which cap goes on which rod. As long as they are new and matched they should be fine as long as you keep track.

What better way to keep track than to stamp them.

I'm with sick69 also on the 4 wheeled stand. Also, I'd consider a drip tray for one. Nothing like having a big mess of oil/coolant all over the floor to slip and slide around in. Rags only go so far.

just hang it from an old child's swingset in your backyard -- thats what one of my neighbors does, and he's a rocker!

Also, I'd consider a drip tray for one. Nothing like having a big mess of oil/coolant all over the floor to slip and slide around in.
