this isn't a for sale ad!

I have a full set of either 16" or 17"(correct me if i'm wrong) split rims for a 1967 c-10 1/2T in pretty decent condition, I know a guy that is interested in them and I was wondering how much they are worth?

Re: this isn't a for sale ad!

There have been serious injuries and deaths caused by split rims and if they were mine I would make sure they were destroyed.

Re: this isn't a for sale ad!

Some people like the rims, most hate them for the reason Jim stated.
I don't think they are worth anything. To the right person, they may be worth something though. I konw a lot of those rims have been sold for scrap.

i know that it is illegal to ever touch them with a ten foot pole but they are more collector items than anything

Split rims are fine as long as they are treated with respect and caution.

Re: this isn't a for sale ad!

$50-75 if someone really wants them. I would never put split rims on my truck. All it takes is one oooops. and that could be the end of the line. JMO

Re: this isn't a for sale ad!

i hope you're getting a signed, witnessed and notarized letter from the buyer saying they will not use them on a reunning vehicle, or that $50-75 worth of profit is going to end up landing you with a big ass wrongful death lawsuit.

we all know how lawsuit-happy people are these days. it's never their fault, it's your fault for selling them (that would be the lawsuit filed)

What is it that happens with split rims that causes death and injury?

Re: this isn't a for sale ad!

I agree with the $50 - $75.
I also agree that if people are careful, the split rims will be OK. I have no doubt that the person buying them from you is looking for split rims for a reason, and is probably having a hard time finding them because everyone is so scared of them that they have scrapped them all. That no doubt makes them a little more valuable to the person that wants them.

Re: this isn't a for sale ad!

I think I have one on mine that came from the PO as a spare tire. I'm not sure though because I don't know what split rims look like. anyone with pics? If it is i'm not even going to hold on to it as a spare. I didn't know there were problems with them. It's not worth getting hurt over. anyway any pics

Re: this isn't a for sale ad!

I googled split rims, and it looks like they are a crude version of the bead lock rims. It looks as though the rim of the wheel itself is removed and then the tire and tube is installed and then the rim is wedged in between the tire and wheel. I don't think I would take my chances if that is the case.

Re: this isn't a for sale ad!

to answer Rickf's question i believe once you get the tire and tube on the wheel and but the ring part on if the bead doesn't catch on the rim it shoots that ring off at pretty high speeds taking off legs and or heads,
their nickname I belive are Widowmakers, Xshadow they look like a regular rim with an extra ring around the side

Re: this isn't a for sale ad!

Wow...I didn't have any idea. I've never had split rims before...I do have one that came on a truck that I got. the po put it on as a spare with a narrow tire on it. the other three were 33" 12.5 I didn't care about the engine/drivetrain much so I used the truck for burnouts untill i took it apart....the tire/rim held up for that and it's still on the truck frame....I'm not keepin that rim! I'm going to find another to put on there.

Re: this isn't a for sale ad!

I am doing a 100 pt. restoration on my 1968 50th Anniversay Longhorn that came with 16" splits. Several tire shops will work on them in Seattle. I will restore a set of 4 I bought for $10 at the local swap meet.

Re: this isn't a for sale ad!

I had a boss....notice the key word is "had". I was working in his shop one afternoon. This guy brought in a split rim. My boss had never taken apart one. I told him not to touch it. He was over confident. I told him them to rap chains around the rim and tire before inflating it. He didnt listen. The ring came out hit him in the head...killed him instantly. My dad always told me to never mess with those things. He also told me about the chain trick. I would toss them in the nearest scrap pile and walk away.
