Engine Swap

I have a 1971 C10 stepside I am looking at putting a 1973 Olds 350 and auto transmission in and was wondering if anyone had done this one before and could offer any advice.

I did try searching but couldn't really find anything.

Now, I understand this combo is not ideal but it is dirt cheap and can get me going down the road for now while I work on brakes, chassis, wiring, etc. Because the stock 250 and crappy tranny now won't do it.

Then I can build the small block I want.

You have to move the mounts. The olds mounts sit farther back then a Chevy does. i have put Olds motors in everything. I even stuck one in Dodge ram 92. make sure you have the Olds frame mounts. The Chevy mounts wont work. The cross member for the trans should be ok.

I assume it is a 3 speed or 4 speed manual behind the 250.

Whats wrong with the 250, - does it not run? If it runs at all - its already better than an Olds 350 for your truck, and a new clutch, if the tranny needs it would be less than the cost of modifying your driveshaft for a weird engine swap.

Tons of people swap in Olds and Buick engines - but usually the 455's

I think you'll love the rocket motor. Olds motors are pretty much indestructible. Have fun with it.

I'd take an olds over a 250 too personally. Probably no need to mod the driveshaft either. Install the correct yolk for the tranny you'll use, slap the tranny in there supported by a good jack, slide the engine in, if it clears everything, drill the holes, mount the engine, and call it good.
My Longhorn had a pontiac 350 in it when I got it, I pulled it out and tossed a caddy engine in it. If I had to do it all over again, I woulda done it the exact same way.
